The 12 best places to stay in Italy, from Rome to Verona

Read on for the 12 best places to stay in Italy, plus a few of our favorite hotels in each destination.

    1. Rome: where to stay in Italy for first timers who want to sample a bit of everything

Walking the streets of Rome is like walking through time. The “Eternal City” was the seat of Western civilization for nearly 1,000 years before the Roman Empire fell. Even then, the city remained a dominant force through the Medieval and Renaissance periods.

Such history has had a profound influence on the Rome of today. It’s why the city isn’t just one of the best places to visit in Italy, but anywhere in the world. Culture, architecture, food (check out our foodie guide to Rome)...Rome has it all.

The ancient part of the city will especially appeal to history enthusiasts. Even millennia later, the Colosseum is a sight to behold. But it’s not the only site in this part of Rome worth visiting. The area around Via del Corso in the ancient heart of Rome, for example, is one of the city's main shopping thoroughfares. Here, you'll find a mix of international brands, designer boutiques, department stores and souvenir shops.

If you want to get off-the-beaten-path, check out unique things to do in Rome — or if you only have time for the highlights, read our 3-day Rome itinerary for ideas.

Hotels to stay at in Rome, Italy

From the coolest boutique hotels in Italy to some of Europe’s most luxurious accommodations, Rome delivers.

J.K. Place Roma is one of our favorite and top-booked places to stay in Rome. This five-star hotel is decidedly modern, but its design still pays homage to the city’s storied past. Meanwhile, Chapter Roma is another glamorous option (and another one of our top-booked hotels).

Check out our full guide on where to stay in Rome for the complete lowdown on the best hotels to stay in Italy’s capital. Your Fora Advisor can also help to matchmake you to one that’s right for your style.

Fora Perks at J.K. Place Roma:

    • $100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

    Fora Perks at Chapter Roma:

    • Welcome amenity, upgrade whenever possible.

    2. Florence & Tuscany: the best places to stay in Italy for art, gastronomy & architecture junkies

Another contender among the best places to visit in Italy for the first time: the beautiful city of Florence. Once the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence has maintained its artistic and cultural prominence with some of the most prestigious museums and sights in Europe. Examples include the Uffizi Gallery and the Historic Center of Florence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Simply taking in the sights tops the list of things to do in Florence. But as the capital of Tuscany, there are amazing opportunities for foodies and oenophiles (see a 3-night Florence itinerary for inspiration). Visitors to Florence can savor authentic Florentine cuisine, sampling iconic dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine T-bone steak) and pappa al pomodoro (tomato and bread soup), accompanied by fine wines from the surrounding region.

As rife with culture as it is gastronomy, Tuscany’s beautiful rolling hills, vineyards and medieval villages serve as the quintessential Italian backdrop for couples’ trips and solo adventures alike.

Hotels to stay at in Florence, Italy

Florence is home to some of the best places to stay in Italy. Our top-booked hotels include Hotel Continentale, Gallery Hotel Art, and Grand Hotel Minerva, all three of which are located near the heart of the city, with unimpeded access to great neighborhoods in Florence. If you’re looking for a boutique hotel in a less crowded part of the city, Ad Astra is a trendy option.

Check out our guides to where to stay in Florence or where to stay in Tuscany for an in-depth look at some of our favorite neighborhoods, towns and hotels.

Fora Perks at Hotel Continentale — Florence:

    • $100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Gallery Hotel Art:

    3. Venice: a romantic place to stay in Italy for couples & foodies

The ornate detail in Aman Venice's exterior is present from one of the city's major canals

There’s no better place to spy Venetian architecture than its birthplace — highlights include St. Mark's Basilica and Doge's Palace — and the romantic canals and narrow, labyrinthian streets of Venice grace many travelers’ bucket lists.

The same can be said of world-renowned Venetian cuisine. The local gastronomy is a blend of fresh seafood, delicate risottos, flavorful cicchetti (small snacks) and other traditional dishes infused with the rich culinary heritage of the Veneto region.

If you have around three days in Venice, you can hop from island to island by gondola or water taxi, taking in the various sights from the grand canals and scenic overlooks.

Hotels to stay at in Venice, Italy

Aman Venice and Hotel Danieli are among the most luxurious hotels in Venice. But there’s no shortage of great options throughout the canals — see our guide on where to stay in Venice.

(Sidenote: If you’re interested in Aman properties in a wildly different setting: check out our breakdown of our favorite Aman hotels.)

    Fora Perks at Aman Venice:

    • $100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

    Fora Perks at Hotel Danieli:

    • $100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

    4. Amalfi Coast: one of the most scenic places to stay in Italy

A wicker chair with a plush cushion is positioned along a balcony overlooking the Amalfi coastline

Image courtesy of Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast

One of Europe’s best honeymoon destinations, the breathtaking Amalfi Coast just south of Naples (see below), on Italy’s western coast. Calm, clear waters provide an idyllic setting for leisurely swimming and snorkeling, while charming Italian towns offer opportunities for authentic cultural exploration.

The Amalfi Coast is an excellent choice for travelers looking to stretch their legs while hiking through scenic trails like the Path of the Gods. But there are many things to do around Amalfi for all types of travelers, so don’t fret if you’re not into outdoorsy adventuring (check out our luxury travel  Amalfi itinerary for more ideas).

Hotels to stay at on the Amalfi Coast, Italy

The towns and cities along the Amalfi Coast are among the best places to stay in Italy to enjoy the country’s natural beauty. Likewise, there are many magical resorts spread throughout the coast, like Caruso, a Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast and Palazzo Avino (read our interview with Palazzo Avino’s owner, Mariella Avino).

Fora Perks at Caruso, A Belmond Hotel, Amalfi Coast:

    • $90 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Il San Pietro Di Positano:

    • $100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily. Upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

    5. Sardinia: where to stay in Italy for a mix of adventure & relaxation

A stylish suite with stone walls and a marina and sea view.

Sardinia is a Mediterranean island off Italy’s west coast known for its luxe beach resorts and vibrant scenery. Hidden grottos, sapphire-water beaches and rocky hills contribute to one of Italy’s most diverse regions and make Sardinia one of the most fun places to explore. Like the Amalfi Coast, there are a ton of beautiful coastal villages to check out, as well.

Sardinia is one of the best places to stay in Italy for families that desire a mix of adventure and leisure.

Hotels to stay at in Sardinia, Italy

Hotel Cala Di Volpe is an elegant, five-star choice with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea and private beach access. But there are a lot of options for all budget types. Connect with a Fora Advisor to chat about the property that’s best for you.

Fora Perks at Hotel Cala Di Volpe, A Luxury Collection Hotel, Costa Smeralda:

    • $100 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenity, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

    6. Sicily: the best place to stay in Italy for history, culture & iconic Mediterranean sights

Image courtesy of San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel

As Italy’s largest island, Sicily offers a distinct experience from Sardinia — both from a contemporary development perspective and in an archeological sense, with some sites dating back thousands of years. Influences on Sicily’s culture and history may surprise, with elements of the ancient Greeks, Romans, Arabs and even the Normans evident in Sicily’s architecture.

There’s more to Sicily than history, though. Taking in the breathtaking scenery of the neighboring Aeolian Islands and sampling the main island’s rich gastronomy are only a couple of the more luxurious things to do in Sicily (and our 3-day Taoirmina itinerary has even more ideas).

Hotels to stay at in Sicily, Italy

Sicily has a huge range of hotels and villas to choose from. Atlantis Bay is one such example, if you’re interested in luxury accommodations. There’s also Four Seasons’ San Domenico Palace in Taormina — if it looks familiar, that’s because it’s the hotel featured in HBO’s The White Lotus. (But don’t worry, it’s quite tranquil in reality.)

Like Sardinia, there are dozens of great options spread throughout the island. When you book with a Fora Advisor, they’ll make sure you get a hotel (and room) that checks all the right boxes.

    Fora Perks at Atlantis Bay:

    • €50 food / beverage credit, welcome amenity, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel:

    7. Milan: where to stay in Italy for designer fashion & shopping

Milan is sometimes overlooked among the best places to stay in Italy. This northern Italian city doesn't have quite the same kind of name recognition as, say, Rome or Venice.

This is a completely different story among the fashion-conscious. From Gucci to Versace and Armani to Dolce & Gabbana, Milan may be home to more upscale designer brands than any city in the world. Likewise, Milan is a dream destination for shoppers and travelers with an eye for luxury. But there’s more to this city than fashion (and business — Milan is also Italy’s economic hub).

Few cities in Italy offer a better exhibition of historical and contemporary architecture than Milan. Moreover, the city arguably boasts Italy’s most cosmopolitan vibe, manifesting in everything from its exceptional international dining to its vibrant arts scene.

Hotels to stay at in Milan, Italy

Milan is where to stay in Italy for uncompromising urban luxury. From Armani Hotel Milano to Rosa Grand Milano, you’ll find some of Italy’s ritziest resorts and hotels here.

For a deeper dive read our neighborhood spotlight on where to stay in Milan.

Fora Perks at Armani Hotel Milano:

    • $100 hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Bulgari Hotel Milano:

    • $100 hotel / resort credit, welcome amenity, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Rosa Grand Milano – Starhotels Collezione:

    8. The Italian Lakes (Lake Como & Lake Garda): the best places to stay in Italy for a leisurely retreat

Two loungers sit beneath an umbrella, positioned to look out over Lake Como

The Italian Lakes Region actually includes several destinations, each offering a slightly different experience (we can help you figure out which resonates with you best). Lake Como and Lake Garda are the most popular, and home to extravagant villas — both historical sights and luxe resorts — prominent museums and wineries (read about things to do in Lake Como).

If you’re looking for more of an exhilarating experience, many of the lakes are teeming with opportunities for watersports, from windsurfing to sailing.

Hotels to stay at in Lake Como, Italy

As mentioned, the lakes are filled with magnificent, villa-type resorts such as Passalacqua. The property, which is owned by Valentina De Santis, was designed to feel like a home.

“We just looked at the history and we restored what it was meant to be,” Valentina said in our interview with her. “What we also discovered is that every terrace had its own soul.”

Another great property is Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como. Ideal for the discerning traveler, these elite properties are a masterclass in refined lakeside dwelling.

Alternatively, the Italian Lakes Region provides an excellent segue from Milan, with the relaxing allure of the lakes providing a respite from the vibrancy of the city. Whether you choose to visit the lakes as a day trip or split time between the two areas, a Fora Advisor can easily help you navigate all the details and logistics.

    Fora Perks at Passalacqua:

    • $100 food / beverage credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como:

    • $100 food / beverage credit, welcome amenity, breakfast daily, upgrade whenever possible.

    9. Cinque Terre: the best place to stay in Italy to explore charming coastal villages

Cinque Terre is a gorgeous coastal region in Northern Italy characterized by a string of five colorful, historic villages interspersed with lively harbors and vineyards. It’s an amazing destination for culture junkies eager for a taste (literal and figurative) of Italian life and cuisine outside of the big cities.

Pro tip: Hiking trails connect all five villages, but if you want something faster, the train is your best bet to move from village to village (unless you have a boat rental for the day, of course).

    10. Verona: where to stay in Italy for medieval architecture & Shakespearian vibes

Beneath a rooftop awning: stylish furniture fills a common space while Verona's historic architecture is visible in the distance

Image courtesy of Due Torri Hotel

While best known as the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona is also an exciting city to discover for architecture and history enthusiasts. The surprisingly well-preserved Arena di Verona, for example, was built almost 2,000 years ago yet still hosts events today. Brutal gladiatorial combat has been replaced with heavenly operatic performances and other pleasant festivals.

Beyond the ancient Romans, elements from every era of Verona’s past — from the Gothic façade of The Verona Cathedral to the Neoclassical styles of Verona’s town hall — are evident in the city’s design, making it a fun place to stay in Italy for architecture junkies. Verona is where to stay in Italy to enjoy the country’s medieval and Renaissance architecture in a more laid-back setting.

Hotels to stay at in Verona, Italy

If you want to stay in the heart of the city, Due Torri Hotel and Hotel Indigo Verona are fantastic choices.

Due Torri has a luxurious Old-World vibe while Hotel Indigo has more of a trendy, boutique feel to it. The former is barely a block from the canal that bisects the city, while the latter is set on one of Verona’s main boulevards. In either case, you’ll have excellent access to the city and unbeatable views.

Fora Perks at Due Torri Hotel:

    • 100% hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks Hotel Indigo Verona - Grand Hotel Des Arts:

    • $50 hotel / resort credit, welcome gift, upgrade & extended check-out whenever possible.

    11. Naples & the Ruins of Pompeii: Neapolitan cuisine, stunning ocean vistas, infamous ruins…

Ornate decor with neoclassical vibes fills the lobby of Grand Hotel Parker’s

Image courtesy of Grand Hotel Parker’s

Naples is a spirited city with a rich historical and cultural heritage, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the Historic Centre of Naples and nearby archaeological ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. But the city’s biggest draw is its seaside ambiance.

While discovering Naples, you’ll encounter delicious cuisine (Naples is the birthplace of pizza), bustling markets and the stunning coastline of the Bay of Naples, where you can take scenic boat trips to nearby islands (see more things to do in Naples).

Hotels to stay at in Naples, Italy

Our guide to where to stay in Naples, Italy has the lowdown on the city’s top hotels and resorts. But The Ritz-Carlton, Naples and Grand Hotel Parker’s are among our favorite luxury properties. Of course, the city is also home to a lovely variety of boutique hotels, too.

Fora Perks at Grand Hotel Parker’s:

    • Hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at The Ritz-Carlton, Naples:

    • $100 hotel / resort credit, breakfast daily, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

    12. Sorrento: an upscale coastal town set between Naples and Amalfi

A private balcony with hardwood floors, plunge pool and beautiful ocean view

Image courtesy of Laqua By The Sea

Sorrento is a stunning coastal town in southwestern Italy renowned for its views of the Bay of Naples (the city of Naples is actually on the other side of the Bay) and its proximity to the Amalfi Coast. In fact, staying in one generally warrants visiting at least one of the other two.

Sorrento’s picturesque cliffside villas, narrow cobblestone streets and fragrant citrus groves provide an idyllic Mediterranean experience. Visitors can explore historical sites such as the 14th-century Chiesa di San Francesco and the Roman ruins of Villa Pollio. The town's laid-back atmosphere, delicious cuisine featuring fresh seafood and local ingredients and warm hospitality make it one of the best places to stay in Italy for travelers seeking a taste of upscale Italian culture and natural beauty.

Hotels to stay at in Sorrento, Italy

A few of best places to stay in Sorrento, Italy include Laqua By The Sea, Maison La Minervetta and Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, among others. Between the three, travelers can choose between boutique-style accommodations, a more discerning atmosphere and a healthy balance of the two.

Fora Perks at Laqua By The Sea:

    • Welcome amenities, upgrade & extended check-in/out whenever possible.

Fora Perks at Maison La Minervetta:

    • Welcome amenities, upgrade whenever possible.
