Curator’s statement
I am in love with the incredible Spanish architecture of Antigua and the majestic Lake Atitlan and all its villages. Overall, Guatamela is a wonderful trip! Great destination for anyone who wants a dose of Mayan culture and that special experience that is still very much alive in this region. Leave the heels at home! This is not that place as there are many stairs, cobblestone walkways and a lot of walking involved. Hike, kayak and take in the organic beauty of Mayan life!

Things to do in Guatemala
Antigua is a beautiful tiny village surrounded by volcanoes. Wander through culture and history as you visit the many shops and restaurants around this lovely place. Don’t forget your picture at the famous Santa Catalina Arch.
Lake Atitlan: This lake is just stunning! This is by far the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen. Hop on one of the many water taxis and visit all the different indigenous towns. It is a laid-back atmosphere and just a cool spot to kick back, relax and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you. Take a sunrise hike or simply find a lookout and go see “The Indian’s nose," peaks that resemble a human face. Visit the weaving workshops as well as the many artisanal markets.
Hike up Pacaya Volcano- It takes about 1hr 30min to hike so I took the easy and dare I say lazy way out and rented a horse. Remember this is an active volcano so yes, be adventurous but remember its active.
So as you look out , simply breathe and enjoy the panoramic views.
Places to eat & drink in Guatemala
One of the best ways to enjoy any destination is through their food and there are plenty of restaurants around to cater to your needs.
Casa Santo Domingo in Antigua is an old convent turned into a luxury hotel. The grounds are spectacular and the restaurant is divine.
Support the community and eat like a local by trying a “tostada” (corn tortilla with toppings such as refried beans, cheese and guacamole) or “bacalao a la vizcaina”(delicious salt cod stew).
All of a sudden I’m hungry.
Thank you Guatemala for an unforgettable trip!
