Aspen is the ultimate winter playground. Skiers love the world-class downhill skiing and snowboarding on its four stunning mountains: Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk and Snowmass.

Aspen Mountain is right in town and has a good mix of trails for every skill level (even beginners), while Aspen Highlands is geared more toward intermediate and expert skiers, with Highland bowl runs. The largest of the four, Aspen Snowmass is about 15 minutes away from downtown Aspen and has trails for all levels. Aspen Buttermilk, 10 minutes away, is great for more low-key skiers and also offers terrain parks.

“Aspen has some of the best instructors in the business,” Fora Advisor Alli Widman said. “Whether you are a seasoned pro or just starting out, the instructors at Aspen will meet you where you are, challenge you and ensure you have an amazing time while improving your skills.”

If downhill skiing isn’t your thing, Fora Advisor Rachel Meyers suggests going snowshoeing, snowmobiling or cross-country skiing by booking a local tour operator who knows all the best places in Aspen. And you can't miss the charm of outdoor ice skating at Silver Circle rink, which sits right in downtown Aspen and is a great family activity for all ages.

After a day on the slopes, head into town for Aspen's legendary après-ski scene. Belly Up offers fantastic live music, or you can hit up some chic parties and dine at cozy, upscale restaurants (see below for our advisors’ recs).

Summer in Aspen is also a prime time of year for active enthusiasts who love the outdoors but don’t necessarily want to rough it. Hikers can’t miss Maroon Bells — one of the most photographed mountain scenes in North America. Park at the Aspen Highlands Visitor Center and take the free Maroon Bells shuttle bus to the trailhead, where a variety of hiking trails lead you to spectacular mountain vistas, as well as Maroon Lake and Crater Lake.

Other nearby activities include white water rafting or fly-fishing on Roaring Fork River, mountain biking on trails and scenic drives along Independence Pass. The 32-mile drive passes over the Continental Divide at a peak altitude of 12,095 feet, offering incredible scenic views plus a chance to visit Independence Ghost Town. And continuing on to Leadville, you’ll find a charming mountain town surrounded by mountain views. If you can’t commit to the Independence Pass drive, head 12 miles south to step back in time at Ashcroft Ghost Town.

Aspen also has a creative side, attracting music lovers with the annual Aspen Music Festival and a calendar of outdoor live music.

Fora Advisor Cindy Rhee also recommends the Aspen Art Museum, for both its exhibits and cafe.

“Have lunch or drinks at the rooftop cafe, where you'll have access to sweeping views of Ajax mountain,” Cindy said. “Check out the Shigeru Ban architecture and the contemporary art exhibits of the museum (it's free!).”

If you’re in need of retail therapy, the shopping in downtown Aspen is epic any time of year. To get into the all-American spirit, start at Kemo Sabe for Western wear and unique cowboy accessories with a modern twist. Top off your new outfit with a handmade cowboy hat from Nick Fouquet. For casual but stylish clothing and shoes for both men and women, Fora Advisor Brooke Tuchman suggests visiting Pitkin County Dry Goods.

“This is an Aspen staple!” Brooke said. “This boutique has been around for over 50 years and continues to feature a fabulous assortment of brands all year round.

Other notable shops include Cos Bar for high-end skin care and Gorsuch, offering designer ski wear and some home decor.

    Where to eat in Aspen

Downtown Aspen is packed with upscale restaurants, hip cafes and lively bars, with an especially glitzy après-ski scene. And after a day on the ski slopes or hiking trails, you’ll be ready to unwind. People-watching is on point here, and our advisors shared some of their favorites spots for both dining and mingling.

If you’re staying at Hotel Jerome, you’re in luck as it has two popular venues. JBar has a historic, American West feel and is a great meeting place for your group before dinner. Bad Harriet is on the top of everyone’s list for a nightcap, with a brooding vibe and extensive craft cocktail list, plus Japanese-inspired small plates.

“Located below the famous Hotel Jerome, this speakeasy-style bar is the perfect spot for excellent cocktails with an upscale vibe,” Fora Advisor Brooke Tuchman said.

When you need some hearty laid-back fare, go to Meat & Cheese. This spot does double duty as a gourmet shop (grab the makings for an easy charcuterie board) and restaurant.

“Get the chicken board, ask for extra sauce and a side of bread,” Fora Advisor Claire Herzog said. “You won't regret it. Also, the best margarita around!”

Clark’s Oyster Bar is a hit with seafood lovers, dishing up fresh oysters and daily seafood specials. Casa Tua is focused on chic Italian dishes like antipasti and handmade pastas, plus Fora Advisor Cindy Rhee notes there’s a popular bar and upstairs club.

Set in a historic miner’s cottage, White House Tavern is known for its crispy chicken torta and lively bar scene, a great spot for lunch or a casual dinner. Jour De Fete is a beloved local café offering French-inspired breakfast and lunch plates.

Sway Aspen is in the center of town and brings a modern twist to Thai cuisine. Also in town closer to the chair lifts, Poppycocks is a favorite for classic breakfast and brunch recipes.
