If it’s May in Ann Arbor, then commencements are upon us. Michigan in May is gorgeous with the trees filled out in green and pink and flowers are everywhere. I just returned with my family to attend a commencement ceremony for our new grad, and we had a blast! Ann Arbor is very busy during this time, but fortunately Detroit is available with many options. We spent three nights in Detroit, and one night in Ann Arbor, but they are close enough together to go back and forth in under an hour. I hope you enjoy this itinerary.

Detroit is a revitalized metropolis with an amazing food, art and culture scene. It is home to the most Black-owned businesses in the United States. The diversity in Detroit is one of the reasons that makes this city so special. There are a plethora of eateries, bars and activities. You will never fret about running out of things to do in this urban landscape. Everyone that goes out of their way to spend time in Detroit is surprised how much they love it, but it's no surprise to the local Michiganders! If you are wanting an authentic city experience, take time to visit Detroit.

Mackinac Island is a charming small island that sits between Michigan's upper and lower peninsula's. What makes this island so special is that when you step onto it's soil, you essentially step back in time. There are no cars allowed on the island. Tourists and residents alike get around on foot or bike. The sound of horse hooves and the smell of fudge engulf your senses.

There is a reason that Time Magazine named Detroit one of the World's Greatest Places in 2022. It's not just the city that put the world on wheels and gave us the great groove of the Motown Sound. Detroit is a foodie's dream and a sports-lover's nirvana. While I'm partial because it's my birthplace and hometown, many will attest to its dynamic culture and history. It's a summer sandbox and a winter wonderland. World class museums and a lively art scene make it a haven for artists. As the birthplace of techno music and a thriving house music scene, there is no shortage of night venues to dance the night away. Its river and massive island park, Belle Isle, are amongst its gems and are second only to its welcoming "salt of the earth" people.
