3 of the best romantic getaways in Michigan

Read on for three of our favorite romantic Michigan getaways.

(Planning a couples trip sometime in autumn? Check out our guide to Michigan in fall.)

    1. Mackinac Island: a cute & historic island on Lake Huron

In many ways, Mackinac Island feels like a window to the early 20th century. This is a place where you really have to slow down and take in the scenery, as cars and other vehicles aren’t allowed. Instead, travelers and locals get around either on foot or by horse-drawn carriage.

But just because the island embraces a simpler way of life doesn’t mean it’s boring. There are plenty of fun things to do on Mackinac Island, from horseback riding and ghost tours to fudge tastings and bike tours.

Accommodations on the island are equally quaint and historic. (Our review of The Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island highlights one of our faves, BTW.)

    2. Ann Arbor: a college town that doubles as one of the most romantic getaways in Michigan

Perhaps best known as the home of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor is also one of the best romantic getaways in Michigan for couples who want a fun downtown to explore.

The college-town vibe contributes to an excellent, but fairly laid-back nightlife scene with plenty of great breweries, venues and the like. During the day, you can check out cool museums like the University of Michigan Museum of Art or the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, as well as the city’s plethora of great eateries.

Accommodations here are notably more upscale than what you’ll find on Mackinac Island, too. One of our favorites, Weber’s Boutique Hotel, is just on the outskirts of the city and provides lavish furnishings and amenities.

(P.S.: if you want a more exciting urban scene, see our guide to Detroit, which is only about 45 minutes away.)

Fora Perks at Weber’s Boutique Hotel:

    • $25 food / beverage credit.

    • Welcome treat in room on arrival.

    • Upgrade & guaranteed late check-out.

    3. Grand Rapids: a fun, urban option for a Michigan couples trip

If you like the idea of an urban getaway for your couples trip but aren’t necessarily looking for the college-town experience, Grand Rapids is a cool alternative to Ann Arbor. The city is notably larger, offering a greater variety of entertainment, dining and nightlife.

If you’re looking for natural beauty, you don’t have to look far. Grand Rapids is bisected by the Grand River — where you can enjoy all sorts of waterfront activities — and Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park offers a scenic escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
