Curator’s statement
Mackinac Island is a charming small island that sits between Michigan's upper and lower peninsula's. What makes this island so special is that when you step onto it's soil, you essentially step back in time. There are no cars allowed on the island. Tourists and residents alike get around on foot or bike. The sound of horse hooves and the smell of fudge engulf your senses.

Things to do in Mackinac Island
Take a Carriage Tour
Get acquainted with your surroundings by reserving a seat on a horse-drawn carriage tour shortly after your arrival to the island. A guide will take you around the island sharing interesting facts about the area and it's history. You'll learn so much, share a few laughs and it's fun for all ages!
Tour Fort Michilimackinac
Make the short hike up to the Fort and explore what life was like for the soldiers stationed there with their families. Watch the cannon fire, explore the historical exhibits and watch reenactments by costumed interpreters.
Rent Bikes
There are so many beautiful sights to take in as you cruise around the shores of Lake Huron, making it a popular activity for visitors. From Arch Rock, to British Landing and on to Devil's Kitchen, there is plenty to stop and see, though the entire island is only about 8-miles around.
Visit the Butterfly House
There are actually two Butterfly Houses on Mackinac Island, one of which, Wings of Mackinac, you can visit a stop on the carriage tour. My personal favorite is the Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House & Insect World. Stop in and admire the tropical garden and hundreds of bright colored butterflies.
Try Fudge
There are numerous fudge shops to choose from on the island and honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. The smell of fudge in the air on Main Street will surely convince you to step inside at least one of these shops where you're welcome to try free samples of the many flavor options just as Peanut Butter (my personal favorite), Mint Chocolate, or Rocky Road.
Ride a Horse
There two riding stables on the island - Cindy's Riding Stable and Jack's Livery. Neither of which take call ahead reservations and run on a first come, first serve basis. Once they know you're riding experience and capability, they'll match you with the perfect horse and send you on your way. You can opt for guided trail tours or unguided carriage rentals.
Shop to you Drop
There are so many great boutique stores along Main Street, most of which are dog friendly too! Spend most of the day popping in and out of all the shops. Make sure to buy yourself a souvenir before you go!
Go on a Ghost Tour
One of the more unique tours offered on the island is at Haunts of Mackinac. This is an easy paced 90-minute tour along the historic streets of Mackinac, sharing ghost stories, legends and another look at the historic island.
Places to eat & drink in Mackinac Island
The Pink Pony
There are so many good restaurants to eat at while in Mackinac, but I think the one you absolutely have to try is The Pink Pony in the Chippewa Hotel. They fill up fast so go early and grab a table on the patio for great views of the harbor. Nothing but good vibes here!
The Woods
If you're looking for more of an upscale dining experience, I recommend The Woods. Owned by the Grand Hotel, this restaurant is situated, you guessed in, in the woods of Mackinac Island. You'll likely want to take a (horse) taxi to get here. End your evening with a little game of bowling in their back alley.
Carriage House
Another upscale option is the Carriage House at Iroquis Hotel. Enjoy waterfront views and an American Cuisine.
Winchesters
Winchesters is a fairly newer restaurant located at the new Bicycle Inn on Main Street. It offers great food and craft beer. Flat screen TVs showing the latest sporting events.
These are just to name a few...there are really so many more options to choose from!
