Curator’s statement
Pristine nature, amazing stone villages, bridges, and hiking paths. You will enter a world of natural wonder that was partly forgotten because nobody could get to it. If the Zagori people did not build bridges and pathways amongst themselves, this world of 46 villages in northern Greece would have been cut off from the world forever. A hiking, biking, and rafting paradise for the casual outdoorsman and woman! Visit and you will never be the same afterwards. Then top it off with floating monasteries in the sky at Meteora and you will be in Heaven, literally.

Things to do in Northern Greece

Hiking paths in this region cross over hundreds of stone bridges that were the only connection between villages.
Hike the trails that connect all of the villages. You can also see and hike through the deepest gorge in the world (Vikos), compared to its width.
Boat or raft down the Voidomatis River.
Sample any of the huge variety of different pies that are unique to this culinary center of Greece.
Climb Mount Tymfi, one of the tallest in the Pindus mountains.
Bicycle the numerous deserted mountain roads that will take your breath away, literally and figuratively.
Places to eat & drink in Northern Greece

We had a quick lunch in Kalambaka and enjoyed everything from the service to the drinks to the typical Greek dishes.
Taverne Michael in Kipoi: Outdoor seating and a great kitchen serving traditional Greek fare.
Traditional coffee house in Fragkades: Fantastic local tastes of coffees, cakes, and side dishes.
Aspasi in Votonos: Local hearty dishes, souflakis, and meat dishes are their specialty
Archintiko in Metsovo: Great mountain views and a homey atmosphere.
Vakis Grill in Kalabaka: Superior grilled meats and lots of good ouzo!
Need to know
Bring your good hiking shoes as most places require a good amount of walking (Zagori villages, monasteries at Meteora) even if you do not like to walk much. But it is certainly a paradise for folks who want to be active while enjoying magical moments among Greek history and culinary feasts.
