Advisor - Northern California: Reset Your Health Amid Redwoods, Hot Springs & Open Skies
Curator’s statement

There is something about the scale of the redwoods, the cold Pacific wind on a Big Sur cliff, and the silence of a Sonoma morning that does what no spa can replicate: It clears the mind completely. My clients return from Northern California not just rested but reset, reporting clearer thinking, deeper sleep, and a renewed sense of what actually matters. It is a place where nature does the heavy lifting, and all you have to do is show up. Booking through me ensures that every detail is handled so that the moment you arrive, there is nothing left to manage but your own restoration.

Things to do in Northern California

Sunrise yoga, stargazing & Japanese hot baths at Alila Ventana Big Sur

Set on 160 all-inclusive acres where ancient redwoods meet the Pacific coastline, Alila Ventana Big Sur offers complimentary yoga, guided walking meditations, and stargazing sessions as part of every stay, alongside Japanese-inspired mineral hot baths that are among the most restorative experiences on the California coast. Big Sur has long been regarded as a sacred curative site, and Spa Alila channels that energy through treatments rooted in Indonesian traditions, European holistic techniques, and locally harvested herbs, including eucalyptus, lavender, pine, sage, and arnica.

Geothermal mud baths & mineral springs in Calistoga

Calistoga, at the northern tip of Napa Valley, was founded as a hot springs resort in the 1860s and remains one of the most authentic therapeutic spa destinations in America, where geothermal waters rich in minerals rise naturally to the surface. The Spa Solage at Solage Calistoga has elevated this tradition into a 20,000-square-foot experience with hot and cold plunge pools, infrared and steam saunas, and magnesium therapy, all without sacrificing the original healing integrity of the waters.

Private wine country hiking & cycling tours through Napa & Sonoma

The trails and backroads of Napa and Sonoma offer some of the most beautiful active experiences in the country, from dawn hikes through the Mayacamas Mountains above the valley floor to guided cycling tours through Carneros and the Dry Creek Valley. My preferred operators offer private, bespoke itineraries that can be paired with winery visits, al fresco picnics with estate wines, and seamless hotel transfers.

Forest bathing in the ancient redwoods of Muir Woods & Armstrong Grove

The science of forest bathing, shinrin-yoku, has been embraced by integrative medicine practitioners worldwide, and Northern California's ancient coastal redwood groves are among the most powerful natural environments on earth for this practice. A private guided experience through Muir Woods or Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, away from public crowds and designed around mindful immersion, is one of the most quietly profound experiences I recommend to any client visiting this region.

Restorative ocean experiences along the Sonoma & Mendocino Coast

The northern California coastline above San Francisco is raw, windswept, and spectacularly beautiful, offering whale watching from dramatic headlands, tidal pool exploration, and coastal hiking trails that carry none of the crowds of the more southerly shores. For clients who find healing in proximity to wild ocean, a night or two in Mendocino or Sea Ranch is an essential counterpoint to the more structured wellness programming inland.

Private winery estate experiences in Napa & Sonoma

Northern California's wine country is also its longevity country, where farm-to-table eating, outdoor living, and a culture of moderation and pleasure have long been associated with exceptional health outcomes. I curate private estate winery experiences at some of the most celebrated producers in both valleys, combining tastings with vineyard walks, meet-the-winemaker conversations, and, in some cases, exclusive access to library vintages unavailable through any other channel.

Places to eat & drink in Northern California

The French Laundry

The French Laundry, Yountville

Thomas Keller's legendary three-Michelin-star restaurant in Yountville remains one of the greatest dining experiences in the world, and securing a reservation here requires planning and the right relationships. Booking through me is among the most effective ways to access a table, and the nine-course tasting menu, with its signature cornet of salmon tartare and its impeccable wine pairings, is not something a client who loves food should leave Northern California without experiencing.

Auro at Four Seasons Napa Valley, Calistoga

Calistoga's only Michelin-starred restaurant showcases the culinary depth of Northern California's agricultural heritage through a seven-course seasonal tasting menu, set within the working vineyard estate of the Four Seasons. The farm-to-table philosophy here is genuine and rigorous, with ingredients sourced from the resort's own Elusa Winery gardens and neighboring producers.

The Sur House at Alila Ventana Big Sur

The Sur House draws its inspiration entirely from the land and sea surrounding it, showcasing Big Sur seasonal produce through a modern American menu in a room framed by views of coastline, forest, and the Santa Lucia Mountains. Dinner here, timed to the Pacific sunset from the Sur House Terrace, is one of the most quietly spectacular dining experiences in California, and, for all-inclusive guests, it is included as part of the stay.

Solbar at Solage Calistoga

The poolside restaurant at Solage is the social heart of Calistoga's most design-forward resort, offering a California-rooted menu that genuinely reflects the spa culture of the property: locally sourced, beautifully light, and perfectly paired with the surrounding hot springs landscape. It is the ideal lunch between a morning mineral bath and an afternoon wine tasting.

The Charter Oak, St. Helena

One of Napa Valley's most beloved dining destinations, The Charter Oak is the informal sibling of The French Laundry, sharing the same Christopher Kostow culinary philosophy but in a wood-fired, vegetable-forward, deeply convivial setting that is considerably easier to book and no less memorable. The whole-roasted vegetables and the ember-cooked proteins are consistently extraordinary.

Bouchon Bistro, Yountville

Thomas Keller's French bistro in Yountville is one of the most perfectly executed casual-luxury dining experiences in California, a place where the steak frites and the roast chicken have been refined to a level most fine dining restaurants cannot match, in a setting that manages to feel both celebratory and completely relaxed. A late lunch here between a morning spa treatment and an afternoon winery visit is one of my favorite itinerary combinations in the entire valley.

Need to know

Getting there

San Francisco International (SFO) is the primary gateway for Northern California, with extensive direct international service. Oakland (OAK) offers a useful alternative for the East Bay and Napa. For Big Sur, a drive down Highway 1 from San Francisco is one of the world's great coastal drives, but car rental or private transfer should be arranged in advance. Canyon Ranch Woodside is just 30 minutes from SFO, making it exceptionally accessible for a fly-in wellness stay.

Best time to visit

September and October are the golden months in Northern California, combining the warmth and clarity of late summer with the spectacular energy of harvest season in wine country. May and June offer cooler temperatures ideal for active wellness programming, hiking, and coastal exploration before the peak season crowds arrive. Big Sur is beautiful year-round, but most serene in spring and fall.

How to structure your stay

The most effective Northern California wellness itinerary combines regions: typically two to three nights at Canyon Ranch Woodside or Alila Ventana Big Sur for deep restorative programming, followed by three to four nights in Napa or Sonoma wine country for the culinary, active, and social dimensions. My clients who do this combination consistently describe it as one of the most complete and energizing travel experiences of their lives.

Always book through your advisor

Fora's Preferred Partner relationships across Northern California's finest properties deliver real, tangible benefits: complimentary room upgrades, daily breakfast, resort credits, and early check-in and late check-out wherever available. Beyond accommodation, I hold direct relationships with most wellness teams, enabling priority enrollment and custom health consultations, and I maintain the connections necessary to secure tables at The French Laundry and other coveted dining destinations that are simply unavailable through standard booking channels. Every detail of a Northern California journey, from the first health appointment to the last vineyard sunset, is elevated when we work together.
