Day Trip

A group of people walking down a street next to a body of water

My recent cruise ship port stop in Hobart, Tasmania was a delightful adventure that allowed me to explore some of the region's most captivating attractions. The day began with a visit to the enchanting Royal Botanical Gardens, a haven of tranquility nestled in the heart of the city. With its vast collection of native and exotic plants, the garden offered a kaleidoscope of colors and scents, providing a truly immersive experience for nature enthusiasts. I found myself captivated by the meticulously curated displays, from the tranquil Japanese Garden to the spectacular Lily Pond. It was a blissful escape into the wonders of the natural world.

Leaving botanical beauty behind, I embarked on a journey up to to the summit of the majestic kunanyi/Mount Wellington. kunanyi (pronounced koo-narn-yee) means ‘mountain’ in palawa kani, the beautifully revived language of the Tasmanian aaboriginal peoples.

I marveled at the breathtaking panoramic views that unfolded before my eyes. Although it was Summer the cool mountain air reminded me that I was 4,167 feet (1,269 meters) above sea level.

I took in the sweeping vistas of Hobart's cityscape, surrounding hills, and the expansive coastline. I couldn't resist capturing the scene on camera, but no photograph could truly capture the amazing view.

To conclude my day of exploration, I made my way to the Bonorong Wildlife Refuge, where I encountered some of Australia's most iconic creatures up close. From playful kangaroos hopping around to cuddly koalas lazily munching on eucalyptus leaves, the refuge provided a unique opportunity to interact with and learn about Australia's diverse wildlife. The highlight of my visit was meeting Tasmanian devils, observing their quirky behaviors, and understanding the conservation efforts aimed at protecting these fascinating marsupials. It was a heartwarming experience that left me with a newfound appreciation for Tasmania's rich biodiversity.

My time in Hobart was a captivating blend of natural beauty, botanical wonders, and encounters with unique wildlife. It was a day filled with awe, exploration, and a deep connection to the natural world. I left Tasmania with cherished memories, a profound admiration for this remarkable corner of the globe, and desire to visit again.
