Need to know
Traveling solo, especially as a woman, is an empowering and liberating experience, but safety should always be a top priority.
Research Your Destination: whether or not you're working with a travel advisor to plan out your trip, always do some research of your destination(s) leading up to your trip. Get to know the local customs, what to wear, what places to avoid and most importantly, how to show respect for the local culture.
Know Your Surroundings (or pretend like you do): Try to maintain an air of confidence and security while exploring on your own. Walking with your nose in a map or your phone will make you stick out as an easy target, especially in a large city. If you lose your bearings, don't panic and maintain your composure until you can stop at a store or cafe where you can consult your phone or map and regain your bearings.
Keep Your Private Info Private: It's likely you'll make friends while on your solo adventure, but at the risk of sounding paranoid, keep your personal information to yourself. By that I mean, your full name, where you're staying, what your next stop will be, etc.
Know Your Limits: This one is particularly crucial, both physically and emotionally. Give yourself the chance to have down time if your plans include plenty of physical exertion. Emotionally, recognize your travel limits so you can better plan how often you change destinations to avoid travel burnout.
