The "Hooch the Bus Bottle" strategy

If you book the "Wine Country Tour" through Carnival Cruise Line, you get a signature perk: a free mini bottle of wine. Here’s the catch—you can’t take it to your cabin. If you try to walk onto the ship with it, security will make you check it in until the end of the cruise.

The solution? The 45-minute "Hooch" ride. Most people crack their bottles the second they sit down for the trek back to the pier. Our guide was the MVP, armed with a corkscrew and glasses, turning the shuttle into a mobile lounge. It’s the ultimate way to bond with your fellow passengers before hitting that security line.

But I am getting ahead of myself. Let us backtrack to my favorite Carnival Excursion in a long time, offered on the Carnival Panorama out of Long Beach, California!

Stop 1: L.A. Cetto: The titan of the valley

First up is the heavy hitter. L.A. Cetto isn’t just a winery; it’s an institution with a legacy that goes back nearly a century. And you get to see the giant facility in all its glory.

  • The family saga: It all started in 1928 with Don Angelo Cetto, an Italian immigrant who brought his passion for viticulture from Trentino to Baja. He didn't just plant grapes; he planted the seeds for the entire Mexican wine industry.

  • The dynasty: His son, Agustín Cetto, expanded the empire in the '60s and '70s, and today, the third generation—Luis Alberto Cetto—runs the show. When you see those "L.A." initials, you’re looking at a three-generation dynasty that survived economic shifts and droughts to become one of the most awarded wineries in the world.

  • The pour: We went through a flight of four, ranging from crisp whites to their legendary, deep reds. It’s the blockbuster experience of the Guadalupe Valley with style and class.

Stop 2: La Casa de Doña Lupe: The soul of the soil

Just down the road, the energy shifts. We pull into La Casa de Doña Lupe, and the corporate polish is replaced by a warm, backyard-hacienda embrace. This is the house that Guadalupe "Doña Lupe" Toscano built, and you can feel the heart in every corner.

  • The matriarch: Doña Lupe is a valley legend—a pioneer of organic farming who turned this dusty plot into a sanctuary of wine, jams, and hot sauces.

  • The wood-fired magic: The smell of the pizza stand hits you immediately. It beats a burger on the Lido deck any day of the week.

  • The legend: You must try the jalapeño bread. It’s an original family recipe that is absolutely out of this world. It’s soft, savory, and has just enough kick to pair perfectly with their artisanal wines.

Bottom line about the wine

While L. A. Cetto is about grand scale and consistency, the wine at Doña Lupe is all about the character of the land. They specialize in organic, small-batch wines that aren't over-filtered or over-processed.

  • The standouts: Keep an eye out for their chenin blanc or their unique blends like the tempranillo-merlot. Because it’s organic, you get a "purer" expression of the fruit.

  • The experience: There’s no stuffy sommelier talk here. You’re often tasting in a rustic, shaded area where the wine feels as natural as the olives and honey they sell right next to the tasting bar. It’s "honest" wine—unpretentious, bold, and exactly what you want to be sipping while that jalapeño bread is still warm in your hands.
