Toddler-Friendly Guide to a Weekend in DC

Curated by
Anna Tretter
I love exploring DC with my two toddlers, but some activities, restaurants and experiences are better suited for families traveling with younger kids than others. Luckily, DC is a very walkable, stroller-friendly city with lots to do both outdoors and indoors... including many free activities so you don't feel like you're wasting money if your toddler is ready to move on to the next thing. DC also has a variety of cuisines and dining options, so whether you (or should I say, your toddler) prefer an upscale food hall, local fast-casual hot spot or a trendy restaurant, you'll find plenty of restaurants to choose from.

I conducted a site inspection while staying at the beautiful InterContinental Washington, DC -Wharf Hotel in Washington, DC. The hotel is located at the Wharf, a sprawling area with many restaurants and shops. Not only is the hotel stunning, but the staff was exceptional in every area of the property. This will be my new go-to while in DC, and I highly recommend this property for leisure and business travelers, as well as families.

Gardens and Culture in Washington, DC

Joslyn Weaver
Washington, DC is a destination that is rich with aesthetically pleasing gardens and amusing culture. There is an ample amount of things to appreciate for any age. Whether you enjoy the outdoors and parks, history or art, you will find something to your liking. My favorite season to visit is the spring because the cherry blossoms and many spring bulbs are in bloom throughout the city and surrounding areas. The weather during that time of year is also just right for most outdoor activities. If you visit other times of the year, you may benefit from warmer weather in the summer or shorter lines for museums in the winter. You can capitalize on unique opportunities any time of the year in Washington, DC.

Washington, DC with Active Kids

Debbie Jacobs
My husband and I recently took our two boys, ages eight and 10, to Washington, DC, just before Thanksgiving. We spent the holiday in Bethesda, and since the kids had never been to DC, we thought it would be the perfect time for a family getaway. My boys are… energetic. They have boundless enthusiasm and are always on the move, so I knew I had to plan carefully. We wouldn’t be spending long hours in museums, and I was prepared to skip a few if needed. I’ll walk you through our itinerary and share tips and tricks!

Washington, D.C., is a city of power, history and culture. But staying at The Dupont Circle Hotel adds a layer of refined luxury and warm Irish hospitality that sets it apart. As the only US property in The Doyle Collection, this boutique hotel embodies timeless elegance with a modern twist, offering a sophisticated retreat in the heart of one of D.C.’s most vibrant neighborhoods. My stay in a junior suite provided a balance of comfort and style, with sweeping corner views of Dupont Circle. This was complete with thoughtful in-room amenities, and a seamless blend of Irish heritage and contemporary design. Whether you’re visiting D.C. for history, politics or pleasure, The Dupont Circle Hotel offers an elevated stay with exceptional service and an unbeatable location.

Best Places to Stay in Washington, DC

Curated by
Gail Collins
There is nothing quite like visiting the nation’s capital and enjoying all the sights and sounds. My favorite time of year to visit is when the cherry blossoms are in bloom around the tidal basin. On top of the many attractions for family or friends, none can compare to a visit to one or more of the Smithsonian museums. One of the more interesting is the American Museum of History with the iconic kitchen replication of Julia Child. Here's a guide to the best places to stay in Washington, DC, for your visit to the nation's capital!
