Vancouver, with direct flights from many US Cities, especially on the West Coast, makes for an easy weekend getaway with reasonable weather year round and plentiful nature opportunities. The city is close to the ocean, islands, forest and mountains so outdoor activities could occupy you endlessly. Foodies will love the city’s eateries full of sustainably sourced seafood and locally grown produce. Vancouver is also an easy launching point for exploring the islands of the Pacific Northwest, taking an Alaskan cruise or heading to Whistler.

Located in the Pacific Northwest the city sits right between the ocean and the mountains. The city is relatively new, clean and full of activities for all ages. My parents retired in Vancouver and so I make the trek there at least once a year, and have taken Alaskan cruises from its port twice. This is the easiest airport-to-cruise terminal experience you’ll ever have because of the excellent Skytrain network. But why not enjoy this lovely seaside city before or after your cruise? In the summer, the sun doesn’t set until after 9 pm, and having a car is optional!

While many summer travelers head across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe, or in the opposite direction to Asia, a trip to the Pacific Northwest is a solid option, especially if your plan is to explore the outdoors in milder temperatures. Start at the adventure mecca that is Whistler, where activities are plentiful throughout the year. Vancouver offers just the right blend of natural beauty and the conveniences that come with a modern city. Lastly, Washington State's versions of mountain peaks, lakes and islets are not to be missed.
