More than BBQ and Blues: Weekend Itinerary for Memphis, TN

Memphis, named one of the places to visit by Conde Nast in 2023, is home to the best BBQ, blues and basketball. Nashville is usually the go-to for a Tennessee getaway, but once you visit Memphis, you will wonder what took you so long to make the trip. The third largest city in the Southeast United States, Memphis gives a small-town feel while you walk downtown or hop on and off the trolley to see the different stops. After a $60 million dollar renovation to Tom Lee Park, a mile stretch of 30 acres parallel to the Mississippi River, and the new Walk on Union being built, now is the time to add Memphis to your must-visit list. You might just fall in love with the city and never leave like I did.

Memphis to New Orleans: A Music Lover’s Road Trip

Growing up in Mississippi, music was deeply embedded in our day-to-day lives. From hymns on Sunday morning to Paul Simon coming out of my mother’s speakers as she hung clothes on the line. It was soulful music that told a story. And believe it or not, much of our country’s own story, from music to Civil Rights to pop culture, grows right out of that stretch of the Deep South between Memphis and New Orleans. This road trip down Highway 61 is perfect for any with a deeper love of music than most, and anyone who is Southern-curious.

Exploring the Musical Heritage of Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is internationally known as the “Home of the Blues” and the “Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll,” but many people overlook its influence on the gospel, jazz, R&B, rap and soul, which also have deep ties to the city. You can feel Aretha Franklin, Elvis Presley, Project Pat, Memphis Slim and BB King as you stroll around downtown and down Beale Street. The second you step out onto the streets of Memphis, you won't be able to help but break out into an enormous smile. Its rich culture, love for music and soul food make you want to sing “Walking in Memphis” (as you should!)
