So you want to go to Istanbul? This city is like no other, where East meets West in a vibrant blend of cultures, history and breathtaking landscapes. Spanning two continents, it offers a unique fusion of ancient traditions and modern life, with iconic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the bustling Grand Bazaar. Rich in history, from the Byzantine Empire to the Ottomans, Istanbul’s diverse architecture, cuisine and neighborhoods reflect its complex and fascinating past. Its stunning views over the Bosphorus and lively streets make it a city that captures both the imagination and the heart.

Istanbul is a city that effortlessly blends rich history with vibrant modernity, offering no shortage of unforgettable cultural experiences. It’s one of my all-time favorite places in the world. While its storied past and stunning architecture draw many in, it’s the incredible food and dynamic shopping scene that keep me coming back year after year. Here are a few of my go-to spots to eat and shop — definitely worth adding to your radar.

The Pera Palace in Istanbul has my deep respect due to its rich history, having hosted luminaries like Agatha Christie and Atatürk since 1892. Its prime location in the heart of the city offers stunning views of the Golden Horn, combining elegance with a deep sense of tradition. I have been to Istanbul many times, however, I have always been in Turkey as part of my job and haven't had more than a day or two on each trip to enjoy the things there are to see in this astonishing world city. Some of my friends asked me about the city because they are going there on a cruise or have an overnight layover. Here are my thoughts for a short trip to Istanbul.

If you’re a traveling cat-lover (like me), Istanbul must be on your bucket list. Istanbul is a vibrant city where East meets West, renowned for its rich history, magnificent architecture and lively streets. But there's something else that makes this city unique: it's cats! From ancient palaces to modern cafés, cats are everywhere in Istanbul, and the city has earned its reputation as the "world capital of cats."

Istanbul’s special relationship with cats began in the Byzantine and Ottoman eras when they were prized for their ability to control the rodent population in a city surrounded by water, where ships and food stores were vulnerable to pests. Over time, these working cats became cherished members of the community.

What makes Istanbul’s cats so unique is their semi-wild status. They’re not feral, nor are they fully domesticated. They roam freely, but are lovingly cared for by residents, who often leave food and water out for them. Cats in Istanbul are considered part of the urban fabric, and the local community and government both take collective responsibility for their welfare.

It was once the capital of both the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires, and as a result, it has a unique blend of Eastern and Western influences. It is the only city in the world that spans two continents, and its ancient history and culture blend seamlessly into the modern world.
