Off-the-Beaten Path Savannah Guide

Savannah, Georgia has long been known as a beautiful, historic southern city (and the step-sister to Charleston.) Today, Savannah is much more than southern charm and history, it feels electric. The city is expanding rapidly with new chic hotels, fantastic restaurants and hip rooftop bars. But if culture and history are your thing then Savannah delivers— visit several small-but-well-curated art & history museums, historic churches and even the first Jewish synagogue in the United States. It is reputed that during Sherman's March to the Sea, the General believed Savannah too beautiful to destroy and in turn presented the city to President Lincoln as a Christmas gift!

A Taste Journey in Savannah, Georgia

We love to plan trips around food and culture and Savannah has it all. Nicknamed “Hostess City of the South” because this walkable city is full of sweet southern hospitality, cultural experiences and a next level food and beverage scene (“cups to go” are a thing here!) . The only month we might recommend staying away would be August when it is insanely hot. Favorite months to visit are March/April and September/October. We like experiencing Savannah without a car- the city is best experienced on your feet and there is always Uber/Lyft if your legs give out or for any further away destinations you may want to visit.
Here are a few our our favorite ways to savor Savannah.

Savannah is somewhat affectionately known as Charleston's little sister, but it certainly packs a punch of its own with fascinating history, varied and delicious cuisine and an abundance of greenery and sunshine. Savannah is a river-front city with no shortage of rooftop bars to take in the view. Savannah is also the perfect pitstop on your way to Montage Palmetto Bluff, Hilton Head Island or even its big sister!

There’s never a bad time to visit Savannah, but we’ve found Georgia’s low country to be the perfect family retreat for ringing in the new year. It’s a destination made for slowing down, exploring Savannah’s cobblestoned squares, strolling the beaches of the Golden Isles and indulging in Southern comfort food. Great for a couple’s getaway or a multigeneration family vacation, you can truly choose your own adventure in Savannah.

I love Charleston, but have always wanted to explore more of the Southern Lowcountry that encompasses Georgia and South Carolina. After extensive research, I crafted an itinerary that included sightseeing, historical architecture, beautiful low-country beaches and, of course, amazing food! There is so much to see in Savannah and the surrounding Sea Islands and that is where we started. However, you can start in either Savannah or Charleston.

A Visit to Hotel Bardo, Savannah, GA

Curated by
Kathryn Brennan
New to Savannah's scene in 2024 is Hotel Bardo, housed in a beautiful, historic building just steps from Forsyth Park. Bardo calls itself part urban resort, part neighborhood clubhouse, with Club Bardo welcoming both hotel guests and local members. You feel as though you are stepping in to the most stately of mansions, and then upon entry, are greeted by bright colors, unique design and a fun, upbeat vibe. Hotel Bardo is a must stay on your next trip to Savannah!
