San Miguel de Allende Mexico Travel Guide: Food, Design

San Miguel de Allende might not be the easiest city to get to in Mexico, but once you arrive you are immediately rewarded with a visual sensation of this picturesque city. To uncover the captivating beauty of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico is not hard at all — it's literally everywhere you look in the city center. It's a city that sings to my heart as a creative director who swoons over color palettes and textures and colonial architecture sustained. (The hardest part is not stopping to take a picture of everything and stumbling on the sidewalk.) Mariachi bands line the streets, but also around each corner is a cute cafe with a unique collection of curated art. There is the perfect combination of history and modern spirit.

How To Spend Your Time in San Miguel de Allende

I've been to San Miguel de Allende once but already have a trip booked to return! It is a very safe town with a large expat population and is one of Mexico’s safest cities! It truly doesn't even feel like Mexico but feels more like Spain with lots of beautiful architecture, lots of culture, and is very walkable. February is a great time of the year to visit with no rain and warm sunny days, but chillier nights.

San Miguel de Allende is a popular city for American expats and tourists. You will find a beautiful, colonial city with cobblestone streets and neo-gothic and baroque architecture. While most might think of tequila rather than wine in this region, vineyards are plentiful and some of the local wines are gaining international attention. San Miguel de Allende has a plethora of Mediterranean-influenced restaurants, many with rooftop dining and bars with incredible views of the city and its churches. This itinerary blends wine tourism and a vibrant local art scene with a bit of luxurious relaxation.

Nestled in the heart of Mexico's central highlands, San Miguel de Allende (SMA) is an enchanting destination that blends old-world charm with a thriving international scene of artists and gastronomic delights. This colonial gem has garnered acclaim for its picturesque cobblestone streets and stunning architecture. What captures my heart about SMA are the beckoning courtyards, bougainvillea-draped arches and the yet-to-be-discovered hidden treasures. My idyllic day wraps up as I savor a mezcal cocktail atop one of the many rooftop bars and cafes, taking in a golden sunset.
