Many have said that Puerto Vallarta is the friendliest city in the world, and I believe it is. I have been living in the Puerto Vallarta area since 2020 and I love it here! As a Scottsdale native, one of the things that I took for granted growing up was our close proximity and easy access to Mexico. But while it’s true that you can head south across the border and be at the beaches of Puerto Penasco in a little over four hours (closer even than San Diego!), I didn’t truly realize the rest of what Mexico had to offer until I was much older.

My first trip outside of my beloved Rocky Point was a trip to Puerto Vallarta with my sister and some friends when I was in my early 20s. I was AMAZED at the beauty of the lush green jungles and rocky coves, delighted by the friendliness of the locals and in absolute heaven when it came to the delicious food. I was hooked and I promised myself that I’d make an effort to explore as many unique destinations within Mexico that I could.

After much exploration (I take my research VERY seriously), I’m excited to share my curated list of the country’s top five destinations. From tropical allure to cultural richness, each locale offers a unique blend of experiences. While many of these destinations may seem obvious, there are perhaps one (or maybe two?) hidden gems that might surprise you! Let’s explore these must-visit Mexico destinations together!

Puerto Vallarta is still an underrated destination in Mexico. It’s one of the most idyllic cities in the country and reminds me of the Amalfi Coast. The town is romantic and old world yet modern as it’s one of the most LGBTQ-friendly beach destinations. I recommend venturing out from the all-inclusive resorts, for even part of your stay, to immerse yourself in the city’s culture and party with the locals.

Sayulita, Mexico, is a vibrant and enchanting destination that offers the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, perfect for a girls' trip. With its picturesque beaches, lively surf culture and chic dining spots, Sayulita provides a unique escape from the everyday. Whether you're looking for thrilling outdoor activities or indulgent spa experiences, this coastal gem has something to offer everyone.

Puerto Vallarta is a beautiful and relaxing Mexico destination. Located on Bandaras Bay, Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta are the hubs of activity on sea and on land with many traditional dining establishments to enjoy. The small cultural communities of Sayulita and Bucerias are easily accessible and offer many dining and shopping experiences that are easily walkable. Nuevo Vallarta is a bit more relaxed and quieter than Puerto Vallarta, but you cant go wrong with the Puerto Vallarta area as your Mexico cultural destination.
