Family Holiday Guide to Porto and Lisbon

Curated by

Portugal is an excellent destination for a multi-generational trip. Its principal cities: Porto and Lisbon, are predominantly walking cities with plenty of history, classical architecture and unique local dishes. While Portugal may be best known for its soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, there is more to the nation than football. Discover the country’s obsession with tiling as well as its love for custard desserts and, of course, its Japanese influence. Both cities are a great option for a week-long holiday in western Europe.

5-Day Guide to Lisbon & the Algarve With Kids

Curated by

Portugal is family-friendly and easy to get around with a rental car, making it an awesome choice for travel with younger kids. The gorgeous Algarve region is not even three hours south of Lisbon so the two areas pair perfectly together for a week long trip. Relax at one of the many beach resorts along the southern coast to enjoy the views and wide open space, and then head to the city where there are plenty of activities for kids and adults. The Portuguese people were wonderful with our 18 month old - we had many waiters making silly faces, picking up and washing pacifiers and just generally making us feel welcome. Plus, the wine is divine and cheap :)

Lisbon, my Lisbon – it's not just the "City of Seven Hills," it's a city woven with magic. Imagine vibrant tiles cascading down narrow alleys, fado music that tugs at your soul, and pastel de natas so good they'll rewrite your dessert dreams. I spent my childhood exploring its winding streets, and even after years away, its old-world charm still sets my heart aflutter. Sure, tourism is booming, but that doesn't mean you can't find the real Lisbon. This four-day itinerary isn't just about ticking off boxes; it's about hidden gems, iconic landmarks and vibrant neighborhoods that'll make you fall head over heels for this city.

Lisbon holds a special place in my heart. As a solo female traveler, I instantly fell in love with this vibrant city. It's easy to see why Lisbon is a favorite for those venturing out on their own: safe, navigable and brimming with friendly faces. This captivating destination boasts a rich and unique history, shaped by a fascinating mix of influences, from Phoenicians and Moors to the treasures brought back from Portugal's global explorations. It's easy to overlook Portugal, a small country often overshadowed by its larger neighbor, Spain, and seemingly off the main European track. But trust me, Lisbon is not to be missed. It deserves a spot on your travel wish list, and in this guide, I'll show you why.
