5-Day Guide to Lisbon & the Algarve With Kids

Curated by
Laura Allen
Portugal is family-friendly and easy to get around with a rental car, making it an awesome choice for travel with younger kids. The gorgeous Algarve region is not even three hours south of Lisbon so the two areas pair perfectly together for a week long trip. Relax at one of the many beach resorts along the southern coast to enjoy the views and wide open space, and then head to the city where there are plenty of activities for kids and adults. The Portuguese people were wonderful with our 18 month old - we had many waiters making silly faces, picking up and washing pacifiers and just generally making us feel welcome. Plus, the wine is divine and cheap :)

I am looking forward to returning to the W to experience everything it has to offer, from direct beach access to the expansive pool deck.

This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to spend a month living in Portugal, where I fully immersed myself in the country’s rich culture and stunning landscapes. As part of this experience, I took a short weekend trip to the Algarve, Portugal’s southernmost region, renowned for its dramatic cliffs, golden beaches and vibrant local culture. The Algarve is a place where history, particularly the legacy of Moorish rule, blends seamlessly with modern Portuguese life, offering visitors a unique mix of cultural experiences and natural beauty. During my stay, I visited the W Algarve, a resort that perfectly encapsulates the region’s dynamic energy and historical richness. This property stands out for its cutting-edge design that thoughtfully incorporates both contemporary luxury and traditional Portuguese elements, such as ceramics and Moorish-inspired patterns. The W Algarve offers a vibrant atmosphere where you can explore the culture and beauty of the Algarve by day — whether that’s relaxing on the beach, exploring the nearby towns or savoring local dishes — and returning to a stylish and luxurious setting each evening. This resort is ideal for travelers who appreciate modern design, cultural immersion and a lively vibe, and I’m excited to share more about it.
