As a Scottsdale native, one of the things that I took for granted growing up was our close proximity and easy access to Mexico. But while it’s true that you can head south across the border and be at the beaches of Puerto Penasco in a little over four hours (closer even than San Diego!), I didn’t truly realize the rest of what Mexico had to offer until I was much older.

My first trip outside of my beloved Rocky Point was a trip to Puerto Vallarta with my sister and some friends when I was in my early 20s. I was AMAZED at the beauty of the lush green jungles and rocky coves, delighted by the friendliness of the locals and in absolute heaven when it came to the delicious food. I was hooked and I promised myself that I’d make an effort to explore as many unique destinations within Mexico that I could.

After much exploration (I take my research VERY seriously), I’m excited to share my curated list of the country’s top five destinations. From tropical allure to cultural richness, each locale offers a unique blend of experiences. While many of these destinations may seem obvious, there are perhaps one (or maybe two?) hidden gems that might surprise you! Let’s explore these must-visit Mexico destinations together!

Puerto Vallarta, the heart of Mexico’s Pacific coast, is characterized by its Sierra Madre Mountain views and swimmable beaches. This vibrant and colorful city offers a range of experiences, welcoming travelers of all ages and backgrounds. If you’re someone who’s on a mission for good food when you travel, here’s how to enjoy the relaxing and carefree atmosphere of a Puerto Vallarta all-inclusive while still enjoying the local fare.

Puerto Vallarta boasts renowned golden beaches along the Bahía de Banderas, vibrant emerald jungles and the striking mist-covered Sierra Madre mountain range. Its cobblestone streets and roofs are adorned with red tiles that perfectly harmonize with the surrounding natural splendor. Puerto Vallarta is still an underrated destination in Mexico. It’s one of the most idyllic cities in the country and reminds me of the Amalfi Coast. The town is romantic and old world yet modern as it’s one of the most LGBTQ-friendly beach destinations. I recommend venturing out from the all-inclusive resorts, for even part of your stay, to immerse yourself in the city’s culture and party with the locals.
