Outside Charleston: Be Active and Relax in Kiawah Island

Kiawah Island is a barrier island 25 miles southwest of Charleston. It is truly a one-of-a-kind gem. Kiawah boasts 10 miles of shoreline and 25 miles of bike trails. Its maritime forests, marshes, and shoreline are home to an abundance of wildlife–20 species of mammals, 30+ species of reptiles, and 300 bird species. Kiawah is home to the largest nesting area for loggerhead turtles in the region and is one of only a few areas in the world where dolphins strand feed. My family started visiting Kiawah in the early 2000’s, and we have been part-time residents since 2015.

Site Inspection at The Sanctuary Hotel in Kiawah Island

A visitor to Kiawah Island since the early 2000s and a part-time resident of Kiawah since 2015, I have stayed at The Sanctuary Hotel many times and regularly frequent its restaurants and shops. It is one of my favorite hotels, and thus I decided to do a site inspection in November 2023 in order to share information with our Fora community. Once you visit, you too will go back again and again.
