Is it possible to design a first-time trip through France for two teens, grandma and a wheelchair? Of course it is! The trick of the trade when developing European itineraries is to fully understand pacing, interests and how often the family wants to pack and unpack. For this custom trip, we had multiple interests: a foodie, a WW2 history buff, a budding artist and surfer and a repeat traveler, who wanted to ensure hotels were five-star and experiences were a blend of luxurious and local, with great coffee, luxurious bedding and wheelchair accessibility.

Nestled on the Atlantic coast along the border of Spain, Biarritz offers a unique blend of cultures and landscapes. This region is a haven for surfers with its pristine beaches and world-class waves, while golf enthusiasts can enjoy picturesque courses set against stunning backdrops and foodies will relish the local flavors, particularly the famous Espelette pepper from the French Basque town of the same name. This town and the surrounding area have drawn me back every year for the past 10 years. This itinerary can be done in five days or a more leisurely seven to 10 to give yourself time to truly relax and take in the beauty around you. You are on vacation, after all.

Bordeaux was my husband and I’s first stop on our two-week South of France honeymoon and I couldn’t recommend it enough! Drinking wine in old Châteaus... what could be more romantic?! We were actually debating which wine region to go to (since there are SO many in France!) and were also considering Burgundy and the Loire Valley, but ended up choosing Bordeaux since we are red wine lovers — and it was truly out of a fairytale. We decided to stay in Saint-Émilion, a small charming town on the left bank and right in the heart of wine country, and are so happy that we chose to stay here vs. the actual city of Bordeaux which is farther away from the vineyards. We wanted to be in the middle of the action — we were even able to bike to a few spots!
