My dad was born in Prague so visiting family is always a favorite trip of ours, but visiting at Christmas is such a special experience. Prague at Christmas is a magical time with their Christmas Markets, decorations and lights and traditional Czech Christmas customs. You also get to miss the peak tourist season that floods Prague in the summers!

Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is a city steeped in history and renowned for its architectural beauty. Its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts landmarks like the Prague Castle, Old Town Square and the iconic Charles Bridge. Today, Prague continues to captivate visitors with its vibrant atmosphere, charming streets and vibrant café culture.

The moment I arrived in Prague, I knew I’d be coming back. There’s something undeniably magical about this city. As I wandered through its cobblestone streets, I felt like I’d stepped into the pages of a storybook, each corner revealing scenes more enchanting than the last. Time and again, I caught myself pausing on the sidewalk, simply to take in the astonishing architectural details. Look up, and you will find intricate carvings of faces and figures watching silently from centuries-old facades, silent witnesses to Prague’s layered history. What truly defines the experience, though, is getting a little lost. It is in those unplanned detours that the city’s hidden gems reveal themselves: quiet courtyards, tucked-away cafes, and local shops brimming with character. Prague offers an unforgettable mix of cozy cafes, specialty coffee houses, atmospheric bars, incredible restaurants, stylish boutiques, and one-of-a-kind experiences. It is unlike any city I have ever been to, and it leaves you wanting more.

Prague transforms into a magical fairy-tale in the winter. The city's baroque and Gothic architecture combined with snow, create a picturesque winter wonderland. The iconic landmarks like the Charles Bridge and the Prague Castle look particularly enchanting during the winter months. When I went for Christmas a few years ago, the Old Town Square transformed into a charming market filled with yummy treats, festive lights and handcrafted goods. It was one of the best winter trips of all time. There are multiple ice skating rinks for all ages to enjoy, and fewer tourists visit Prague in the winter, allowing for a more intimate experience. Savoring that hot chocolate in a cozy cafe and exploring Prague's culinary scene was for sure an unforgettable experience.

Prague is located in the heart of Europe and is one of the continent's underrated gems. The rich architecture reflects Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque. Apart from the beautiful view of the city's breathtaking architecture, there are many exciting things to do all around the city, and Prague is amazing for its fun nightlife. After a full day of sightseeing, a bar crawl accompanied by Absinthe — Prague's signature drink — will have you never wanting to leave!

Ready to re-discover the magic of Christmas? Let’s start with the history. The Christmas markets go back to the Late Middle Ages in the German-speaking part of Europe. Some historians say the tradition started back in 1294. So glad the Europeans have kept the tradition alive for centuries and people of all ages can continue to enjoy the magic of Christmas. The feeling of awe and wonder that we had as children around the holiday season will come springing back to life as we walk around the extravagant displays of the Christmas markets in Europe. This goes without mentioning the many opportunities we will have to taste their food traditions for Christmas all over the stands. Dress for the occasion. By that I mean… it will be winter in Europe, so be bundled from head to toe. Don’t forget the gloves and scarfs, and wear comfortable shoes or boots, as we will be walking a lot, but it will be a leisure walk like when you go shopping. Get your camera ready. All of the places on our itinerary are easily accessible via train, meaning we are going to spend a few days in each town and quickly be off to the next destination rather than catching flights and going through airport security. Besides, traveling by train in Europe in early winter is quite enchanting, the trains are comfortable and we can enjoy the raw beauty of winter landscapes in Central Europe.
