Four Seasons Chiang Mai is one of those places that seems to operate outside of time. Tucked in the Mae Rim Valley, just 30 minutes from the bustle of Chiang Mai’s Old City, this resort immediately pulled me into its rhythm — slow, graceful, and deeply restorative.

Chiang Mai is a city I’ve spent a lot of time in and one of my favorite cities in Thailand. Far away from the beaches and party scene in the south, Chiang Mai is the capital of Northern Thailand, which used to be the kingdom of Lanna. Their unique food, culture, architecture and art all reflect the complex past of the region, having been ruled by Kingdoms in China, Burma and Ayutthaya, back and forth before uniting with the Kingdom of Siam (which became modern day Thailand).

This is one of my favorite properties in the city and is a perfect retreat from downtown. Chiang Mai is only a 90-minute flight from Bangkok, so it makes for an easy weekend getaway as well, if you're already planning a Thailand trip and want a change of scenery. You’ll stay in elegant antique homes turned into luxury villas, among a maze of plants, art and sculptures.

Chiang Mai is a big city with a little town charm. Its vibrant culture and unique experiences make the city suitable for just about everyone. In fact, it is one of my all-time favorite places to visit because of the people, the culture, the walled city, picturesque mountains and the elephants! Our family spent a week exploring the energy, sites and culture of Bangkok and Chiang Mai. We left vowing to return to the country that earns its nickname as “The Land of Smiles.”

The former seat of the Lanna kingdom and widely considered the cultural hub of Thailand, Chiang Mai is more than endless temples and traditional markets.
