India has been on my list for so long, so finally getting to check it off felt like a dream come true. From the moment I arrived, I was swept up in the sensory overload — vibrant colors, soul-stirring flavors, the hum of bustling people and a culture so rich it leaves you mesmerized.

I’ve had so many people reach out saying India’s been calling their name too — and if it hasn’t yet, it should. This country is equal parts beautiful and chaotic, intense and deeply soulful. It’s not always an easy destination, but it is somewhere that’ll leave you feeling fulfilled.

So, if you’ve ever been even a little bit curious, consider this your sign. Here’s your beginner’s guide to India — what to expect, where to go and how to fall in love with it all.

Day 1: Dive into Delhi

Landing in Delhi just after sunrise, the haze in the air gave the city an almost cinematic glow. Stepped off the plane at DEL with a dream and a cardigan, and immediately found myself surprised by how beautifully manicured the airport grounds were — snapdragons, rolling green lawns, a literal garden welcome.

Our drive into the city wasn’t without its dose of morning madness; Delhi traffic is a symphony of honking that oddly reminded me of rush hour back in Texas, just with a little more spice. Speaking of which, the spice market is one of the best things to do in Delhi, and it’s an excellent way to kick off your trip (and ignite your senses).

Pro tip: Bring a scarf or face covering. The smells — cumin, chiles, cardamom — are intoxicating, but this place is not for the faint of nose. It’s chaotic, intense and a wildly authentic peek into daily life.

Next we lunched at Haveli Dharampura, a UNESCO-awarded boutique hotel in the city center. It was my first real taste of Indian cuisine, and it delivered every flavor I had imagined. We even met the mastermind behind the hotel’s restoration and climbed to the rooftop for panoramic views of Old Delhi — an incredible moment of calm above the chaos. It was like stepping into another world — quiet courtyards, intricate details and the dreamiest high tea.

Where to stay

The Imperial New Delhi felt like stepping into royalty. This 1930s gem blends colonial charm with Art Deco glam. I imagine this is how Kate and William are greeted — smiling faces, a warm tikka ceremony, marigold garlands and that unmistakable five-star sparkle. A dinner at Spice Route is a must, even if not staying here!

Day 2: Delhi in full color

We kicked off the day with a sunrise stroll through the Lodhi Art District — a living, breathing gallery where every wall tells a story. The murals weren’t just beautiful; they were shockingly bold, tackling everything from LGBTQ+ rights to religion, pollution and family life. It was such a cool look at how India is not just honoring its past, but actively shaping its future through art.

Next up on our morning agenda: Humayun’s Tomb. And wow, she’s a stunner. Built in the 1500s by Humayun’s wife (queen behavior), this was the first garden tomb in India and the inspiration for the Taj Mahal. With its red sandstone walls, arched doorways and peaceful gardens, it’s the kind of place that makes history feel alive. Humayun’s Tomb walked so the Taj could run.

Post-lunch at the chic Oberoi Delhi, the heat kicked in — literally and figuratively. We dove headfirst into an Indian wedding experience, where we got to play bride for a day — think Bollywood dance lessons, sari embroidery and coffee cup astrology (yes, that’s a thing!). I’ve always been intrigued by Indian weddings, but after this? Fully obsessed.

We ended the day with a visit to Qutub Minar, Delhi’s tallest brick minaret and one of its most striking landmarks. Towering over the city at 240 feet, it’s a jaw-dropping blend of Indo-Islamic architecture and ancient history that puts time into perspective. After a long (but amazing) day of exploring, we switched things up with dinner at Olive Bar & Kitchen, a dreamy Mediterranean spot tucked in a quiet, leafy corner of Mehrauli. It was the perfect palate reset after all the rich Indian dishes.

Day 3: Road to Agra

The next morning we said bye to Delhi and made the drive to Agra. The road here was a lot smoother than I imagined. In 2012, a new high-speed toll road was completed, and it dramatically cut the drive from Delhi to Agra from about four and a half hours to just three.

The journey took up quite a bit of our day, so we only had time for the Agra Fort and an Old Agra city walk. The fort’s grand red sandstone walls and marble details were mesmerizing, while the walk gave us a peek into the vibrant local life.

Dinner at Esphahan was a standout, with the smoked lamb being a total showstopper; I’m still thinking about it! We had an early bedtime so that we could be up bright and early for the Taj Mahal.

Where to stay

Stay at the Oberoi Amarvilas. Arriving here was everything I hoped for. We were welcomed with marigold garlands and tikka, a red dot applied to the forehead as a symbol of welcome and good fortune. This is the hotel to stay at in Agra. Every room has a view of the Taj Mahal, and it’s a grand one.

Day 4: Taj Mahal magic

This was the moment we’d all been waiting for — sunrise at the Taj Mahal. Our expert guides came prepared with all the insider tips, but the best one? Don’t look at the Taj right away. After clearing security, we were asked to face away from it while the guide shared its story, building anticipation before the big reveal. When we finally turned around and walked in...chills. The soft morning light, the symmetry, the stillness — it was pure magic. This sounds cheesy, but I did tear up a little. This one is a no-brainer when it comes to your first time in India.

Time to hit the road again. Next stop: Barwara. The five-hour drive flew by knowing something magical — the Six Senses Fort Barwara — was waiting on the other end. First order of business: a spa treatment. If you know anything about the Six Senses brand, you know they don’t play when it comes to wellness. I went for the Udwarthanam massage — a full-body treatment using medicinal powders to promote digestion, healthier skin, firmer muscle tone and increased circulation. Needless to say, I was in full snooze mode by the end. But it was time to rally — a temple blessing and a glass of wine in a 14th-century bunker were calling.

Where to stay

The welcome at Six Senses Fort Barwara? Next level. Think local live music, warm towels, petals falling from above and a dreamy high tea to ease us into a memorable stay.

Day 5: RanthamROAR

After a few site inspections and lunch at some of Ranthambhore’s most iconic properties, it was finally time for what we — and so many others — came here to see: a tiger. Spotting one on safari isn’t guaranteed, especially in the warmer months, so we kept our expectations low. Honestly, that’s the best mindset, because when it does happen, it feels like an out-of-body-experience.

We got so lucky, catching a glimpse of both a male and female tiger. I’ve been on safari in Africa and thought I’d seen it all, but watching a tiger roam free in its natural habitat? Top-five moment of my life, hands down. If you’re heading this way, do yourself a favor and add a day in Ranthambhore National Park to your itinerary.

Day 6: Pink City

On our journey into Jaipur, we kicked things off with a private tour at Gyan, where we got a firsthand look at why this city is world-renowned for its jewels. From raw stones to dazzling masterpieces, we watched artisans work their magic — some of us even walked out with a sparkling souvenir.

Then it was off to a hands-on block-printing workshop, and let me tell you, if this travel thing doesn’t pan out, I might just become a block-print artist. It’s mesmerizing to watch, and even more fun to try. Afterward, head upstairs to shop the most colorful array of linens, pashminas, jackets and more. Let's just say our suitcases got heavier (again).

We then zipped through Jaipur in one of the iconic Pink City Rickshaws — eco-friendly rides driven by local women. It’s a fabulous way to see the city and support an incredible initiative.

Wrap up a vibrant day in Jaipur with a visit to City Palace, a true showstopper. Wandering through its regal halls and peeking into the royal family's private quarters felt like stepping into a real-life fairytale.

No day is complete without happy hour! Head to the famous Bar Palladio for a “this and yap” vibe; don’t skip the paloma!

Day 7: Faith, flowers and fabric

Wake up and smell the flowers! Start your day by wandering through a bustling wholesale flower market — there’s no better way to kick off the morning. We delved into the deep cultural significance of flowers in India, learning how they’re woven into the very fabric of Jaipur’s temple rituals, each petal adding a layer to the city’s rich history.

Next up: a deep dive into Rajasthan’s sweet side. We got hands-on in the kitchen, whipping up traditional treats dressed to impress with edible flowers. Think almonds, condensed almond paste, rose jam and a final roll through dried rose petals. I’m a sucker for anything rose-flavored, so this was very much my vibe. Pretty and delicious? Say less.

Where to stay

Stay at the Oberoi Rajvilas for a lush, palatial retreat where peacocks roam freely and every detail whispers old-world charm. Set on 32 acres of manicured gardens, this Jaipur haven blends Mughal romance with Oberoi's signature five-star service.
