South Carolina is a foodie’s dream, especially if you love Southern flavors, fresh seafood and cozy, welcoming spots. It's one of the best things to do in Charleston. From the city's buzzing restaurant scene to the peaceful retreat of Kiawah River, I ate my way through some incredible places. Here’s everywhere I dined — and what you should definitely order if you go!

Add these Charleston restaurants to your list

Leon's Oyster Shop

S.N.O.B. (Slightly North of Broad)

This Charleston staple is all about Lowcountry comfort food with a refined twist. We came here for lunch after driving from Kiawah to Charleston, and it was the perfect spot to unwind from the drive. The service is impeccable, and the flavors are pure Southern magic.

Top picks: whipped ricotta and local honey with a grilled baguette

Leon’s Oyster Shop

Laid-back, lively and absolutely delicious, Leon’s is the kind of place where you grab a cold beer, order a ridiculous amount of oysters and just enjoy. This is a local favorite, so you know it’s good. The fried chicken is also legendary, so don’t skip it!

Top picks: chargrilled oysters, hushpuppies, fried chicken and soft-serve ice cream

Little Jack’s Tavern

Walking into Little Jack’s feels like stepping into a classic neighborhood tavern with a nostalgic, old-school charm. It’s simple, cozy and home to one of the best burgers you’ll ever have.

Top picks: the Tavern Burger — it’s award-winning for a reason

Caviar & Bananas

Right off of bustling King Street, Caviar & Bananas is a chic gourmet market that’s perfect for a quick bite, coffee stop or grabbing picnic supplies. They have a little bit of everything, from fresh salads to indulgent pastries. Grab something to go, and head to the nearby Cistern at The College of Charleston Campus for a picnic.

Top picks: any specialty sandwich, a fresh salad and a pastry for the road

The Citrus Club, Rooftop at The Dewberry Hotel

The Dewberry’s Rooftop Bar, The Citrus Club, is the highest rooftop in Charleston, making for insane views of the city’s historic district. I was expecting the food and drinks here to be good, but they far surpassed my expectations. If you’re looking for amazing cocktails and light bites with a view, head to the Citrus Club before sunset.

Top picks: the spicy coconut margherita and Dewberry tea spritz

Nearby restaurants worth traveling for

The food at Linette's and the Willet Room, both at the Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection

Linette’s at The Dunlin, Auberge Resorts Collection

Tucked away in Kiawah River, Linette’s is the kind of place where every bite feels special. The menu is all about fresh, locally sourced ingredients with a Southern coastal twist. The vibe? Elegant but still relaxed enough to enjoy a long, leisurely meal. The dishes here (especially the seafood) are next level.

Top picks: warm cheesy crab dip with fried crackers and saffron rice

The Willet Room at the Dunlin's lobby

A cozy spot inside the Dunlin lobby, the Willet Room is perfect for a brunch, pre-dinner cocktail or just unwinding after a day of exploring. Think beautifully crafted drinks, light bites and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Coffee is very important to me, and it was some of the best I’ve ever had.

Top picks: the Pastry Spread, fried hushpuppies and the crispy chicken sandwich

FortyEight Wine Bar & Kitchen

A must-visit for wine lovers, FortyEight Wine Bar & Kitchen is located in the cute shopping district, Freshfields Village, so head there a bit early if you want to walk around. It’s a relaxed and sophisticated spot that offers a unique self-serve wine experience. They have 48 wines available by the glass, and a delicious menu to pair them with. It's the perfect place for a laid-back evening.

Top picks: any of their self-serve wines, a charcuterie board and the crab cakes!
