Day 1: Bowness-on-Windermere & Ambleside

Green trees on hills and mountains at the back.

Begin your adventure by immersing yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Lake Windermere, the largest lake in England's Lake District. Take a leisurely stroll along the picturesque shore, enjoying the stunning views and serene atmosphere. As you explore, make sure to visit the charming villages of Bowness-on-Windermere and Ambleside, where you can discover a plethora of quaint shops offering unique treasures and local crafts. Don't forget to indulge in the delightful flavors of the region by sampling delicious local delicacies at the numerous cozy cafes and restaurants. These delightful towns are perfect for experiencing the true essence of the Lake District's charm and hospitality.

Day 2: The peaks

Lake with trees and mountains in the background.

Prepare for an awe-inspiring hiking adventure amid the enchanting peaks of the Windermere Lake District. Discover a plethora of captivating trails, many tailored to unique skill levels and embark on a remarkable journey through spellbinding landscapes. Many of the breathtaking vistas you encounter may remind you of scenes from books and you'd be spot-on! In fact, the beautiful landscapes and natural features of the Lake District likely influenced Tolkien's imagination and the creation of the fantastical world of Middle-earth. The connection between Tolkien and the Lake District highlights how real places can ignite the imaginations of authors and artists, leading to the creation of beloved stories.

As you traverse these scenic paths, be sure to bring along a picnic lunch (your hotel or inn may be an easy way to procure a packed lunch), allowing yourself ample time to pause and immerse yourself in the gorgeous panoramas that unfold before you. Prepare to be captivated by the sheer beauty that awaits at every turn.

Day 3: Hawkshead

Two wooden signs pointing in opposite direction.

On your last day, treat yourself to a leisurely cruise on Lake Windermere. Enjoy the tranquility of the water as you cruise across the lake, taking in the immense beauty of your surroundings. Afterward, venture out to explore the surrounding areas. I suggest visiting hte local village of Hawkshead.

Hawkshead is a great place to visit for many reasons. First, it is a must-visit destination for fans of the renowned author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. The village offers insights into Beatrix Potter's life and work, with attractions such as her former home, Hill Top, and the Beatrix Potter Gallery. Peter Rabbit's Garden? Yup, it's there. Well, its inspiration is there. Additionally, Hawkshead's pedestrianized center provides a charming and picturesque environment for leisurely exploration on foot. The village's old-world charm, tearooms serving delicious homemade cakes and traditional architecture further enhance its appeal as an overall delightful place.
