Fora’s Take

Last summer, we travelled to Kenya for our first Safari. We chose Kenya because a visit to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage and a stay at Giraffe Manor was a must. We combined our night at Giraffe manor with safaris in Sumburu in Northern Kenya and the Masai Mara. From seeing the Big Five in their natural habitat to learning about the fascinating cultures and traditions of the local tribes, every moment was filled with awe-inspiring sights and experiences. Our family safari in Kenya was truly the vacation of a lifetime and we have memories from this trip that we will cherish forever. This itinerary offers a combination of luxury, adventure and incredible wildlife experiences. Whether you're a first-time visitor to Kenya or a seasoned safari-goer, you're sure to be amazed by the beauty and diversity of this amazing country.

Day 1: Giraffe Manor

A house covered with green grass and giraffes in the yard.

Spend your first day in Kenya at Giraffe Manor. After check in, spend some time exploring the grounds and the Retreat at Giraffe Manor. There is a 3 p.m. private viewing at the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage where if you are lucky to get a spot, you spend your visit playing with the baby elephants while they have their snack and playtime. Return to Giraffe Manor in time to meet the resident giraffes at afternoon tea. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the grounds, enjoying a spa service or relaxing at the pool and enjoy an amazing dinner on property.

Day 2: Breakfast with the Giraffes and Transfer from Nairobi to Sumburu

A balcony with pool, marble floor and jute roof.

Reserve a room where the Giraffes appear at your window for their early morning feeding. It is an unforgettable experience. After breakfast and more photo opps with the Giraffes, catch your transfer flight to Sumburu. Check into your luxurious safari tent at Sassaab and enjoy lunch overlooking the Ewaso Nyiro River. In the afternoon, go on a game drive or enjoy one of the many activities they offer at Sassaab, including a camel ride and a sundowner.

Day 3: Samburu

Safari park with elephants.

Spend the day on game drives and guided walks in the Samburu National Reserve. Sasaab is known for its spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife, including the "Samburu Special Five" - the Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, Beisa oryx and gerenuk. Back at the camp, enjoy a swim in the pool or a massage before heading out for a sunset camel ride or visit to a local Samburu village.

Day 4: Samburu to the Masai Mara

A covered balcony in a valley.

After breakfast, head to the local airstrip for a flight to the Masai Mara. Shop for beautiful hand-beaded bracelets and other handmade wares from local villagers while waiting for your flight. When you arrive at the Mara, check in to your luxurious tented suite and enjoy lunch overlooking the Mara River. In the afternoon, go on a game drive to spot elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs and other wildlife.

Day 5: Masai Mara National Reserve

Safari parks with zebras.

Spend the day on game drives and guided walks in the Masai Mara National Reserve. The Mara is known for its incredible wildlife sightings, including the annual wildebeest migration from July to October.

Additional Days:

If you're interested in hot air ballooning, this is a great opportunity to book a sunrise balloon safari over the Mara.
