Fora’s Take

Lower Wales is brimming with history and is even mentioned in the ancient Welsh collections of stories, The Mabinogion. Scattered throughout the moorland, you’ll find ponies, sheep and ancient monuments from well before the Norman Invasion of 1066. Along the Pembrokeshire coast, you’ll find the perfect locations for the avid wildlife watcher! There’s no better way to experience Wales than on the back of a sturdy pony. This trip is designed to take you through the rolling hills of Cymru (the Welsh name for Wales) on horseback, for any experience level. On days you aren’t on the trail, you’ll stretch your legs and visit ancient sites to learn about the rich Welsh identity.

Day 1: Arrive in Wales

A picture of the seashore during the golden hour with a beautiful turquoise ocean.

Once you arrive in Wales, it's time to get settled into your lodging. Wales has a maritime climate, causing the weather to be cloudy and windy with rainfall. Due to the high mountains and varying landscapes, the weather can be temperamental: It's highly recommended to dress in layers before venturing out!

A Bite to Eat

If you're staying closer to Amroth, pop by the locally owned Rib & Oyster, the perfect spot for a high-quality meal for the seafood lover!

If you happen to be near Fishguard on a Tuesday evening, stop by the Royal Oak Pub in Fishguard for live folk music.

Discover a Treasure

If you are on the hunt for a treasure, visit The Bazaar Vintage & Antique Warehouse. There, you can bring home items from the Victorian era, or even the 1800s!

There's nothing like a stroll on the beach. The views that Telpyn Beach offers are unique, with craggy hills on one side and a pebbly beach looking across the Bristol Channel. On the other, it's sure to be a beautiful introduction to your stay in Wales.

Day 2: Narberth Castle & Llawhaden Castle

Step Back in Time

Today, you will experience history itself by visiting sites that were mentioned in the ancient Mabinogion. The first is Narberth Castle. In these ancient Welsh tales, it is said to be the dwelling place of Pwyll, Prince of Dyfed (the protagonist of the stories). Although not much remains of the once grand castle, it’s worth a peek.

At Llawhaden Castle, walk through the fortified ruins which once housed the bishops of St. Davids. Built in the 12th century and abandoned in the 16th century, this fortified mansion makes for an enchanting tour.

Day 3: Horseback Tour & Tea

Horseback Tour of the Countryside

It’s the first day riding through the Welsh moorland with Preseli Pony Trekking. Depending on your experience level, you could encounter the Gors Fawr stone circle, or take a leisurely stroll through the Preseli Hills.

Time for a Cuppa

There’s nothing like a cup of tea and cake in a historic cottage. After your trail ride, you’ll visit the Bothy Tea Room at Colby Woodland Garden for just that. Order the Welsh Cake, the traditional sweet bread of Wales, or a Sticky Cornish Cake with a cuppa with cream and sugar. Once you’ve enjoyed your tea, stretch your legs and take in the sights and scents of the nationally protected wildflower meadow, walled garden, and eight acres of woodland foliage.

Day 4: Shire Farms & the Coast

A Shire Visit

Instead of riding the horses today, you will be spending time at the Dyfed Shire Horse Farm. These famous Shires were even visited by the now King Charles and Queen Camilla in 2018!

A Bite to Eat

After getting to know the famous horses, it’s time for some lunch. The newly renovated Mannings in the coastal town of Fishguard hosts a variety of eats, from coffee and cakes to soups and sandwiches. They even have many vegan and vegetarian options to suit all diets!

Explore the Coast

You’ll now explore the Strumble Head Lighthouse. This lighthouse is nestled on the northern Welsh coast, and you’ll find several walking trails. Relax and take in the scenery: watch the Arctic Skuas, petrels, gulls and (if you’re lucky) dolphins, porpoises, seals and ponies! If you are ready for a more intense walk along the coast, take the Pwll Deri trail. It will take almost four hours, but the mixture of wildlife, meadows, and coast will be well worth it.

Day 5: Countryside on Horseback

Horseback Tour of the Countryside

On your final ride with Preseli Pony Trekking, you’ll get to see Carn Menyn. This is the bluestone rock formation inland that was used to create chapels, towns in ancient times and may be the source of the giant stones used to create Stonehenge.

Bring the Memories Home

After your horseback tour of the Welsh scenery, you’ve well earned a leisurely stroll through the town of Narberth Stroll. Pick up some souvenirs at shops like Six at High Street!

Visit the Queens Hall for the Narberth Market for a snack. There you’ll find local vendors selling a range of cheeses, smoked meats, bee products and soaps!
