Day 1: Arrival and introduction to the Quarter

Arrive in New Orleans and transfer to your hotel to settle in and refresh before stepping out to explore. If arriving in the morning, begin your introduction to the city the right way with warm beignets and café au lait at Café du Monde, then wander the charming streets of the French Quarter, soaking in the wrought-iron balconies, hidden courtyards, and vibrant street performers.

In the afternoon, enjoy a guided Garden District, cemetery, and French Quarter tour to ground yourself in the city’s layered history, architecture, and above-ground burial traditions. Which is considered an essential first glimpse into New Orleans’ beauty and mystique.

To ease into the trip after travel, keep the evening flexible: opt for a relaxed dinner near your hotel, join a ghost tour through the Quarter’s shadowed streets, or experience the open-container revelry along Bourbon Street. Turn in early or linger out.

The city will be waiting either way.

Day 2: Brunch, bayous & brass

Ease into the morning with a leisurely brunch at Palm & Pine, a beloved local spot blending Caribbean, Soul, and Central American influences into a thoughtfully rotating menu. Creative cocktails and zero-proof options make it an ideal, unhurried start before a full afternoon.

From there, step deeper into Louisiana’s complex history with a guided plantation tour along the Mississippi River, offering important context to the region’s past. For a change of pace, pair it with a high-energy swamp excursion through Airboat Adventures, where you’ll glide through bayous and wetlands, spotting alligators and learning about the local ecosystem.

Return to the city to refresh before dinner at the storied Antoine’s Restaurant, a French-Creole institution serving guests since 1840 and credited with creating several iconic dishes.

As night falls, head to Frenchmen Street, where live jazz pours from intimate clubs and local artists line the sidewalks, giving an authentic, soulful contrast to Bourbon Street’s robust party scene.

Day 3 A colorful and cultural sendoff

Savor your final morning in New Orleans with one last stop at Café du Monde, or opt for a refined farewell brunch at Muriel’s Jackson Square, where iconic Creole dishes are served overlooking the heart of the French Quarter.

After brunch, immerse yourself in the pageantry of Mardi Gras with a behind-the-scenes experience at Mardi Gras World. Here, towering parade floats and working artists bring Mardi Gras to life year round, offering insight into the craftsmanship, history, and spectacle that define the season—an especially fitting experience during January’s pre-parade excitement.

Keep the afternoon open for seasonal festivities, pop-up krewe events, or a final wander through Jackson Square’s artists and musicians.

End your journey with a leisurely cocktail and one last stroll through the Quarter, letting the rhythm of jazz, layered history, and celebratory spirit provide a memorable farewell to the Crescent City.

Need to know

  • Availability: Mardi Gras season—beginning in early January and culminating on Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday—brings an exciting surge of visitors to New Orleans. Because of this, popular restaurants, tours, and special events fill quickly. To secure preferred reservations and experiences, we recommend confirming arrangements as early as possible.

  • Seasonal awareness: This season draws large crowds eager to experience parades, music, and celebrations. Guests should anticipate increased foot traffic, road closures, and longer wait times for dining, transportation, and tours. Allowing flexibility in your schedule will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

  • Weather: January and February are typically mild during the day, with cooler evenings. The city’s proximity to the Mississippi River, surrounding wetlands, and the Gulf region can create damp, breezy conditions after sunset. Layered clothing and comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended.

  • Safety: As with any major metropolitan destination, visitors are encouraged to remain aware of their surroundings, especially in high-traffic entertainment areas. Staying in well lit, populated areas, keeping personal belongings secure, traveling with companions when possible, and ensuring mobile devices are charged are simple best practices.

New Orleans is a vibrant and welcoming city, and exercising standard travel awareness will help ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay.
