Things to do in Paducah, Kentucky

1. UNESCO Creative City of Crafts & Folk Art
Paducah is one of only a few US cities designated a UNESCO Creative City, thanks to its vibrant arts scene—especially quilting and fiber arts.
National Quilt Museum: A must-see for art and craft lovers, showcasing contemporary quilt artistry from around the world. This isn’t your grandma’s quilt—these are beautiful pieces of art. The museum rotates around 400 different quilts in and out of exhibit, as well as hosts various artists in curated exhibits. Their annual quilt show is typically held in April and is when the museum generally sees the most visitors.
Yeiser Art Center & LowerTown Arts District: Local artists open their studios, and galleries host rotating exhibitions. There are so many shops that feature local work—one could literally spend days seeing it all. The Carson Center for Performing Arts hosts live performances.
2. Rich history & architecture
Paducah has deep roots in river trade, the Civil War, and African American history.
Paducah Wall to Wall Murals: Over 50 stunning murals on the floodwall tell the story of the city’s past. These beautiful murals tell the story of the region, from when the area was first developed, to the devastating floods in the 1930s, to the lively arts center it is today.
Historic downtown: Beautiful 19th-century architecture, walkable streets, boutique shops, and great neighborhood dining. Stroll some of the original cobblestone streets while enjoying all that the local town has to offer. Downtown also offers a variety of antique shops and flea markets for those who love to shop!
William Clark Market House Museum: Housed in the block-long 1905 Market House, this is the only museum in Paducah’s historic downtown area. The museum holds many artifacts and displays about the local history of the area.
3. Riverside charm
Located at the confluence of the Ohio and Tennessee Rivers, Paducah offers scenic beauty and river-centric experiences.
River Discovery Center: Learn about river ecology and commerce. This is a great hands-on experience, especially for younger travelers. Visitors will learn about our rivers and the impact they have on our daily lives.
Riverwalk & Paducah’s Riverfront: Great for a peaceful stroll or attending riverfront events. This really is one of the most well-done riverfronts I have seen. Locals as well as guests enjoy relaxing in lawn chairs and taking in the scenery of the river, barges, and the occasional paddlewheel boat.
4. Lively music & events
From bluegrass to symphony, music thrives here.
Hotel Metropolitan & the Kentucky Blues Trail: Key sites in the history of Black musicians touring the South. Many markers in the area provide historical content about the impact of blues music to the local industry.
Live on the River & Paducah Summer Festival: Community-centered events with music, food, and crafts. Many of the local restaurants have outdoor seating with live bands to enjoy the food, drink, music, and views along the river.
5. Local food & bourbon
You’ll find charming cafés, farm-to-table fare, and Kentucky bourbon.
Freight House (by former Top Chef contestant Sara Bradley) serves traditional Southern and Midwestern flavors with a modern twist. The Chef’s Tasting Menu Experience is highly recommended.
Stella’s: For a “hauntingly good time,” and good food, try out Stella’s, housed in one of downtown’s most iconic buildings. One of the past residents of the building is said to continue to haunt the place—but you won’t be scared away by the good food or drinks served here.
Craft breweries and bourbon bars: Kentucky is known for its bourbon and there is no shortage of places to sample it here.
6. Outdoor recreation
Paducah is great for nature lovers.
Noble Park: Walking trails, a lake, and sports facilities—so many outdoor things to do!
Land Between the Lakes: Just a short drive away, this massive nature area offers hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. This is one of the most beautiful areas in the South! Keep your eyes peeled for the American bald eagle.
