Curator’s statement
The Via Montagna Lombarda Trail represents the ultimate luxury of modern travel: the luxury of time, silence, and a deep connection with an ancestral landscape. This destination is special to me because it seamlessly bridges the rugged, high-altitude wilderness with the elegant historical paths of the famous Greenway on Lake Como. It offers a rare, vertical perspective of Italy, where one can transition from the pristine silence of alpine peaks to the refined heritage of lakeside villas in a single journey. For me, it is the purest expression of the soul of Lombardy

Exploring the Via Montagna Lombarda Trail is an exercise in contrast that deeply resonates with my vision of travel. The journey doesn’t just offer views; it offers a profound shift in perspective. One of my favorite moments on this trail is the early morning transition: leaving the refined, quiet gardens of the lakeside and finding yourself, just a few hours later, surrounded by the raw, granite cathedrals of the Alps. There is a specific point where the path intersects with the famous Greenway of Lake Como, and it’s there that you truly feel the “vertical” soul of this region—a bridge between the sophisticated heritage of the villas and the wild, heroic spirit of the mountains.

Walking the thin line between the alpine silence and the clouds. The Via Montagna Lombarda Trail offers a unique vantage point where the rugged peaks of the Valtellina meet the golden light of the Italian Alps.
During my time on these paths, I was struck by the “luxury of silence.” Unlike the crowded tourist hotspots, here, the only sound is the crunch of stone under your boots and the distant whistle of the wind through the ridges. I remember reaching a small, ancient stone settlement—a baita—where time seemed to have stopped. It’s in these moments, perhaps while sharing a piece of local Casera cheese with a view that stretches to the horizon, that you realize this isn’t just a trek; it’s a return to what is essential. This is the kind of “insider” experience I always seek to share: the hidden Valtellina that lives above the clouds.

Golden hour on the ridges. Witnessing the vastness of the Alps as they embrace Lake Como below—a moment where the effort of the climb meets pure, silent contemplation.
This itinerary is perfect for the active traveler who isn’t afraid of a bit of vertical gain but also appreciates the finer things in life. It’s for those who want to earn their sunset view. After the physical challenge of the high trail, descending back towards the lake feels like a homecoming. The beauty of finishing the day by walking a portion of the Greenway is that it grounds you back into the Italian lifestyle—perhaps ending with a well-deserved glass of Sfursat wine in a cellar that has seen centuries of history.
For me, this trail is a personal recommendation for anyone who believes that travel should be transformative. It’s an invitation to step off the beaten path and discover that the most exclusive destinations aren’t always the most famous ones, but the ones that require heart and soul to be reached.

From mountain trails to historical paths. This stone-paved walkway is part of the famous Greenway of Lake Como, where local heritage meets the modern traveler's path, leading through ancient hamlets and lush gardens.
Need to know
The Via Montagna Lombarda Trail is a rewarding but demanding experience that requires a bit of planning. Here are my essential tips for a flawless journey:
Timing is everything: The best window for this high-altitude experience is from late June to September. Earlier in the year, you might still find snow on the northern slopes, and by October, the weather can become unpredictable.
The “dual gear” approach: Since you will be transitioning from the lakeside (Greenway) to high ridges, layering is vital. Pack high-quality trekking boots for the trail, but keep a pair of elegant loafers or sneakers ready for your return to the Lake Como villages—it’s all about that Italian “sprezzatura” even after a hike.
Logistics and hydration: While there are mountain huts (rifugi) along the way, some stretches are quite remote. Always carry at least two liters of water and local snacks like Bresaola or dried fruit.
The wine reward: You cannot leave the region without visiting a traditional cellar in Valtellina. Ask for a tasting of Sfurzat di Valtellina; it’s a powerful, passito-style dry red wine that perfectly captures the "heroic" nature of the local vineyards you'll see from the trail.
Navigation: While the trail is marked, I highly recommend downloading offline maps or, better yet, letting me arrange a local UIAGM mountain guide to handle the navigation and share the deep history of the dry-stone walls and alpine flora.
