A Colombiana Visiting New York for 20 Days
Curator’s statement

About 10 years ago, I spent five unforgettable months living in West New York, New Jersey, while studying English. As a 21-year-old girl, I used to cross the Hudson from time to time, completely captivated by the charm of the well known Big Apple. I was so grateful to be back for the third time—now for 20 days—and it was incredibly special and touching. And what made this trip even more meaningful? It was my first official journey as a travel advisor. I can’t even begin to describe how thrilled and grateful I felt!

Where to stay in New York City

As a Colombian who has visited many captivating cities and has family all over the world, I can say with absolute certainty that New York City has something genuinely unique to offer both adults and children. Few places, in my opinion, can truly capture the multicultural spirit of the Big Apple. Travelers from all over the world are drawn to it because of its unquestionable charm.

I can attest to the variety and quality of properties this city has to offer because of my professional background: I was a luxury hotelier once with experience in sales. I give its hotels a perfect score of 20 out of 10 for their flawless service, which makes many of them feel like they are on another planet.

It is a dream destination for all kinds of travelers. Cultures from many countries are represented in the remarkably diverse culinary scene. The city also offers a wide range of attractions, including museums, libraries, and famous landmarks, as well as artistic performances for, literally, all ages.

Brooklyn Bridge with a lobster, shrimp, and crab kiosk

In addition to exploring (again), this trip allowed me to reestablish a connection with a city that has held a special place in my heart for more than 10 years and always gives me quality time with family.

I've learned a lot over the years, including how to get to know the city's boroughs and neighborhoods, how to use its extensive public transit system, and how to get around, I think, in the easiest way!

Roosvelt Island

Opera at the Lincoln Center

In October 2024, I made my third visit to Manhattan, having been there before in 2014 and again in 2021. This time, the goal was very clear: to learn more and more about this place that still captivates Colombians and millions of tourists worldwide. Now, as a Fora Advisor, I'm here to transform that expertise into genuine, life-changing experiences for anyone who is prepared to fall in love with New York, as I did!

When I worked in hotel sales, I did hundreds of site inspections myself for hotels like Hotel Las Islas, Casa San Agustín, and Casa Pestagua, but never from this side of the business! Here are my thoughts on a few hotels I visited this time around.

The Lowell

A luxury hotel deserves an exclusive location… and this one delivers. The Lowell is a 100-year-old townhouse property nestled in the cozy Upper East Side borough. Its location makes it truly special—not exactly right in the center of the action (like Midtown, where the famous Times Square is), but just a 15-minute walk away. It's in a peaceful residential area with fewer tourists and more locals, just a couple of blocks from the subway and within walking distance to several nearby attractions.

The hotel has welcomed notable celebrities from the fashion and entertainment fields and many other internationally recognizable figures.

Welcoming area (not a lobby at all)

As I entered the building, I felt like I was walking into a small residential building. It does not feel like a hotel at all, and that is exactly what makes it special and desirable. With only 27 guest rooms and 47 suites, it is, indeed, a boutique hotel, with nearly a one to one guest to staff ratio—a very rare find in the hospitality-packed New York hotel scene.

The iconic rooms, well-kept and nearing on 100 years old, have suites with fireplaces that can be lit for you while you stay. The hotel also offers fresh orchids and other amenities you can only get by reserving through me. All of this and so much more makes The Lowell one of the best hotels in Manhattan!

Dining & other spaces

When it comes to a surprise oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle, this is the place. Being from my hometown, Bogotá DC, I genuinely enjoy those peaceful green spots in the middle of a capital city. Yes, New York being the capital of the world needs these spots.

The Lowell has four distinctive dining spaces and Jacques Bar—the perfect venue for unique dining with decadent cuisine and exquisite signature mixology. Majorelle with Dior Maison perfectly blends with the ambiance of the seasons—magical.

Both Majorelle and Jacques Bar are named after the French painter Jacques Majorelle, who famously constructed the Villa and Majorelle Gardens in Morocco; what a chic pair of name parallels to timeless style and artistic inspiration.

Grand Central Terminal

Hyatt Centric Times Square

As its name suggests, Hyatt Centric properties are designed to place you right at the center of the action—and this one is no exception. Yes, this hotel is in the heart of the hustle and bustle. So if you like being where the spectacle is, you will feel this is your place to stay! Nearby, you will find Times Square (hence its name), Broadway theaters, Rockefeller Center, and several subway stations. This hotel is ideal for exploring iconic NYC attractions on foot or by subway!

The friendly team members at the check-in desk made me feel like I was a welcome guest, so I will say they do make a difference with their service—simply amazing.

Another thing to be grateful for was the drink I had at NYC's highest rooftop bar after a long day! Bar 54 sits on the 54th floor, offering stunning views of NYC—though, to be clear, high prices do come with the view.

DoubleTree by Hilton

I visited this property a day after the NYC Marathon, so you can imagine how crazy the lobby was, but I went with one focus: to make the most of this trip forr all of my beloved travelers. An easy inspection of one room gave me a short but good overview of the hotel and its service.

Need to know

  • Maximize your mobility: Secure, for example, a seven‑day unlimited pass and let me show you how to navigate the subway like a local, saving you time, money, and unnecessary taxi or Uber rides. Although the best way to get to know the city is by wearing your best sneakers.

  • For your stay: Have a hotel budget of at least $200—don't expect a good stay for less. I will do my best to find the best option that fits your personality, too!

Book your Big Apple trip with me! Exclusive insider tips come your way, so you and your loved ones can explore the city like true insiders.
