Things to do on Lake Como

Take a private boat tour of the central lake: For me, there’s no better feeling than gliding past the grand villas and charming villages from the water. This is a must-do to truly appreciate the architecture and the hidden gardens that can’t be seen from the road. I love asking the captain to point out my favorite hidden waterfall or a secluded swimming spot to feel like a true local.

Explore the gardens of Villa del Balbianello: The gardens here are a masterpiece. There’s a particular view from the terrace, framed by elegant arches, where the world just melts away. I always recommend spending a quiet moment there to fully soak in the serene beauty.

Hike the Greenway del Lago: To truly escape the crowds, I suggest a walk along the Greenway. The views are incredible, and it’s an easy way to feel a sense of peace. My personal tip is to stop in the tiny, ancient village of Ossuccio—it feels like stepping back in time.

Enjoy an authentic lakeside aperitivo: My favorite way to end a day is with a pre-dinner aperitivo in Varenna. The atmosphere is more relaxed than Bellagio, and there’s a small, family-run spot where I always order a Spritz and watch the sun set behind the mountains.

Discover Como’s silk tradition: My family has always appreciated the artistry of local crafts. A visit to one of the last silk workshops in Como is a fascinating experience. The passion and skill of the artisans who create these beautiful fabrics is something you just can’t find in a regular boutique.

Places to eat & drink on Lake Como

Ristorante La Terrazza at Grand Hotel Tremezzo: The view from this restaurant is unparalleled, especially for a romantic dinner. I recommend asking for a table on the main terrace to get the perfect photo of Bellagio and the mountains. Don’t miss their classic Risotto alla Milanese.

A La Carte at Mandarin Oriental: Located in a tranquil setting, this is my go-to for a sophisticated dining experience. The menu is a modern take on Italian classics, but the service and the serene atmosphere are what truly make it special.

Trattoria del Glicine: This hidden gem offers an authentic, local dining experience away from the tourist crowds. It’s the kind of place my family would recommend. Their pasta dishes are made with local ingredients, and I can attest that the casoncelli is a must-try.

The Grill at Villa D’Este: A true institution on the lake, the elegance here is timeless. The Grill offers a slightly more relaxed atmosphere than the main restaurant but with the same impeccable quality. The perfect spot for a long, celebratory lunch with a glass of local wine.

Crotto dei Platani: Tucked away in a beautiful garden, this restaurant feels like a secret find. The atmosphere is incredibly romantic, with tables right on the water. I recommend booking for an early dinner to watch the sunset from this perfect, secluded spot.

Need to know

The true magic of Lake Como lies not just in its glamorous villas, but on the water itself. For me, the best way to experience this is to rent a small, classic Italian wooden boat for an afternoon. It’s a truly intimate and romantic way to explore the lake’s hidden coves and secluded shores, a pastime I’ve enjoyed since I was a child. It’s an experience you can’t get on a crowded ferry.

For a more peaceful visit, I always recommend traveling in late September or October. The gardens are still in full bloom, the crowds have thinned, and there’s a certain crispness in the air that makes the atmosphere feel even more special. Also, remember that Milan, Italy’s fashion and design capital, is only an hour away. It’s a perfect combination for those seeking both serene natural beauty and vibrant urban energy.
