Things to do in Amsterdam

Beyond the canals—discovering Amsterdam's charm
Dive into the rhythms at Shelter Amsterdam
Don’t just go to a club—experience a sonic journey. Located directly underneath the A'DAM Tower, Shelter is a beacon for true electronic music lovers. With its incredible sound system and a strict no-photo policy, it’s a place where you can lose yourself in the music and feel the city’s nightlife at its most authentic.
Explore the art of the new generation at the Moco Museum
Skip the traditional crowds and discover the vibrant world of modern and street art. Moco is home to iconic works by artists like Banksy and Basquiat. It’s a powerful and thought-provoking experience that showcases a different kind of creative genius shaping our world.
Experience a private canal vibe
Forget the crowded tour boats. The true magic of Amsterdam is best discovered from the water in a more intimate setting. Book a private boat tour for a few friends and glide through the canals, glass of wine in hand, as the sun sets. It’s the ultimate way to see the city’s stunning architecture and feel its tranquil, romantic side.
Get lost on a bicycle
This is the ultimate rite of passage in Amsterdam. Rent a classic “Omafiets” and let yourself get lost. Ride through the charming Jordaan district, cross small bridges, and discover hidden courtyards. It’s the best way to feel like a true local and stumble upon your own favorite cafés and boutiques.
Shop for style at the Nine Streets
For a dose of unique Dutch design, head to the “Negen Straatjes” (Nine Streets). This area is a network of small, picturesque streets filled with independent boutiques, vintage stores, and artisan shops. It’s the perfect place to find a one-of-a-kind piece that tells a story.
Places to eat & drink in Amsterdam

An evening of refined cocktails in Amsterdam's hidden gems
Mata Hari: A true personal favorite of mine. Tucked away in the Red Light District, this spot is my chic escape. The best way to experience it is to grab a table on the terrace, order a refreshing Gin & Tonic, and watch the world go by. It’s a stylish and intimate place that shows you the hidden side of the city.
De Zagerij: This isn’t just a restaurant—it’s an experience in refined industrial-chic. Located in a beautifully renovated old factory, the atmosphere feels both raw and elegantly designed. They focus on seasonal, high-quality ingredients with a versatile menu. I love coming here for their innovative cocktail menu and the vibrant, yet sophisticated energy.
The Duchess: A feast for the eyes and the palate. This restaurant is a masterclass in modern-day opulence, with a breathtaking interior inspired by a traditional coffee house. I love coming here for a special occasion or just for their famous cocktails. Order the “Grand Margarita”—a sophisticated twist on a classic.
Pluk: This charming café is the embodiment of Amsterdam’s cozy vibe. Located in the famous Nine Streets, it’s the perfect place for a delicious and colorful breakfast or a warm coffee with a pastry. The interior is filled with beautiful little trinkets and unique gifts, making it the ideal spot to relax and get inspired.
Bar The Tailor: For a dose of old-world glamour and perfectly crafted drinks, this award-winning bar is a must. The talented bartenders create liquid masterpieces in an environment that feels both exclusive and welcoming. Ask them to make you their signature “The Tailor” cocktail—you won’t be disappointed.
Rudi’s Stroopwafels: You can’t leave Amsterdam without having a freshly-made stroopwafel from Rudi's, located in the bustling Albert Cuyp Market. Watching him press the thin waffles and fill them with warm, gooey caramel is an experience in itself. It’s the ultimate warm indulgence that every traveler needs to experience.
Need to know
Beyond the art and music, Amsterdam has a beautiful secret: the concept of “gezelligheid”. There’s no single English word for it, but it’s a feeling of coziness, conviviality, and well-being. It’s the warmth you feel sitting in a small pub on a rainy day, or the comfort of a quiet canal-side café. After a late-night DJ set, I’d often find a tiny, hidden spot and just soak in this unique atmosphere. Don’t just visit the landmarks—take the time to simply exist and enjoy the city’s quiet moments. That’s when you’ll truly fall in love with Amsterdam.
