Advisor - Chile’s Lake District: The Hidden Gem Worth Every Mile
Curator’s statement

The Chilean Lake District was the stop on our honeymoon we almost did not add, and it ended up being one of the most unforgettable experiences of the entire trip. This is not a destination most people put at the top of their South America list, and honestly, that is part of what makes it so special. If you are looking for somewhere that feels completely removed from the rest of the world, where every detail is taken care of and every meal is better than the last, this is it.

Stay at andBeyond Vira Vira & let yourself fully unplug

This hotel deserves its own entry because the stay itself is the experience. Vira Vira is a lodge-style property with fewer than 20 rooms, sitting on its own private lake surrounded by the volcanic landscape of the Lake District. Everything is included—your food, drinks, and activities—and you have your own private guide throughout your entire stay. There is nothing to plan, nothing to book, and nothing to stress about. You wake up each morning, decide how you want to spend the day, and your guide makes it happen. What really sets this place apart though is the staff. They go above and beyond in ways that feel genuinely personal rather than scripted. We were on our honeymoon and they surprised us throughout our stay in ways we never expected—small thoughtful gestures that made us feel truly celebrated and looked after. The level of care and attention to detail here is extraordinary. We almost did not add this stop to our itinerary and it ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip.

Hike through the rainforest

The landscape around the Lake District is unlike anything most travelers have seen before. Dense temperate rainforest, volcanic peaks, and rivers cutting through in every direction. Our private guide took us off the main paths and gave us a real sense of the ecosystem we were walking through. It is the kind of hike that reminds you why you travel in the first place. You do not need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy it; the trails range in intensity and your guide will tailor it to exactly what you are up for that day.

Boat trip on the lake

Vira Vira sits right on its own private lake, and getting out on the water is an absolute must. The views of the surrounding mountains and forest from the boat are stunning, and the whole experience is wonderfully peaceful. Go in the morning when the mist is still sitting on the water and the landscape is just starting to come into view. It is one of those moments where you put the camera down and just take it in.

Tour the on-site cheese factory

This one surprised us in the best way. Vira Vira has its own working cheese factory right on the property, and a guided tour gives you a fascinating look at how they produce everything in house. It is a small detail that speaks to the bigger philosophy of the hotel, which is that everything you eat and experience here is intentional and thoughtful. It also makes you appreciate every meal at the restaurant even more.

Spa

After a day of hiking and exploring, the spa is exactly what you need. The treatments are excellent and the setting makes everything feel more restorative than it would anywhere else. Build at least one full spa afternoon into your stay. You are in no rush here, and that is entirely the point.

Embrace the mix of adventure & relaxation

What made Vira Vira so special was the balance. Some days we wanted to be out exploring, hiking through the rainforest or out on the lake. Other days we wanted to do nothing but eat well, sit by the fire, and enjoy the stillness. The hotel is set up to give you both, on your own terms, without any pressure. That kind of flexibility at this level of luxury is genuinely rare and is a big part of what makes this place so hard to leave.

Dining at andBeyond Vira Vira

I do not say this lightly: The food at Vira Vira was some of the best we had on the entire trip, and we ate extraordinarily well throughout. Every meal was perfect. Fresh seafood, incredible bread served daily with a different house-made butter, and menus that felt creative and considered without ever being pretentious. Everything is included in your stay, so you never have to think about a bill or a reservation. Just show up, sit down, and enjoy. This is one of those rare hotels where the restaurant alone would be worth the visit.

Exploring beyond the property

Honestly, we never felt the need to leave. The hotel is designed to be its own complete world and it delivers on that completely. But the surrounding Lake District does have incredible local seafood culture worth exploring if you have extra time. The region is known for its fresh-caught fish, traditional Chilean stews, and locally produced cheeses. If you do venture out, ask your private guide for their current recommendations as they will know exactly where the locals are eating.

Need to know

  • andBeyond Vira Vira is fully all-inclusive, meaning all your food, drinks, and activities are covered. It lets you completely switch off and just be present, which is rare and wonderful.

  • The hotel has fewer than 20 rooms, so it feels incredibly intimate and private. Book well in advance.

  • The nearest airport is Temuco, about two hours away in good conditions. In summer with traffic, our guide told us it can stretch to four hours. Factor that into your travel plans and do not cut it close on departure day.

  • We visited in October, which is spring in Chile, and it was a little cold and rainy. Beautiful still, but if you prefer warmer weather, aim for November through January when the summer really sets in.

  • This stop pairs perfectly between Mendoza and Santiago. It feels like a completely different world from both, which is exactly the point.
