Curator’s statement
This city truly feels like a fairytale. Even after four years here, whenever I come home from a quick walk, I have 10 new photos in my camera roll because I cannot get over the beauty. Its picturesque canals, narrow houses, and world class museums create a setting that feels both intimate and culturally rich. From biking along cobblestone streets to exploring vibrant neighborhoods filled with cafés and markets, there’s something for every type of traveler. Compact, walkable, and endlessly photogenic, Amsterdam offers a perfect balance of relaxation and discovery.

Things to do in Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Max van den Oetelaar
Amsterdam is the perfect size with not a ton of “sightseeing”, so it doesn’t feel overwhelming because just walking the canals is enough. Here is a list of my most favorite things to do:
Boat tour on the canals: Seeing the city from the water is a must. A canal cruise through the UNESCO-listed waterways gives you the best perspective of Amsterdam’s historic houses and bridges.
Museums: There are over 75 in the city alone, so visiting them all is impossible, but the most popular are: Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, and MOCO. All incredible and worthwhile (definitely book in advance!) The Maritime Museum is also one of my favorites!
Visit Vondelpark (even better to cycle it!): The city’s most famous green space, which is perfect for a picnic, a bike ride, or letting kids run free.
Walk through Albert Cuyp Market: Located in De Pijp, the lively open-air market is perfect for sampling stroopwafels, fresh herring, local cheeses, and browsing everything from flowers to fashion.
Wander the Jordaan Neighborhood: Charming streets, boutique shopping, cozy cafés, and classic brown bars make this one of the prettiest areas to explore.
Stroll the Nine Streets: A picturesque shopping district full of independent boutiques, vintage shops, and trendy cafés.

Here is a short list of some of my favorite bakeries and restaurants:
Pastini: Cozy neighborhood Italian spot known for fresh, homemade pasta and comforting, no-fuss dishes. It’s intimate, welcoming, and perfect for a relaxed dinner after a day exploring the canals.
Salmoura: Stylish Mediterranean-inspired restaurant with bold flavors and beautifully plated dishes. Vibrant spices, fresh seafood, and a lively atmosphere that feels both modern and inviting.
Pesca: Interactive seafood experience where you choose your fish market style before it’s prepared to your liking. Fun, energetic, and ideal for groups, it’s one of the most unique dining experiences in the city.
Anouk Bakery: Charming bakery serving flaky croissants, sourdough loaves, and delicate pastries that are as beautiful as they are delicious. The perfect morning stop before wandering the streets.
Zero Zero Sandwich: Tiny Italian sandwich shop serving generously stuffed focaccia and panini layered with high-quality meats and cheeses. Casual, authentic, and perfect for a quick lunch.
Het Koekemannetje: Located in the picturesque Nine Streets district, this beloved cookie shop is famous for its oversized, freshly baked cookies with gooey centers. A must-stop sweet treat while boutique shopping
The Flying Dutchman: Cozy, candlelit cocktail bar with an old-world feel and seriously creative drinks. It’s intimate and perfect for a pre dinner cocktail or a late-night stop.
Canela: Warm and welcoming bakery-café known for its cinnamon rolls and beautifully crafted pastries.
Need to know
Amsterdam is incredibly walkable, but bikes rule the city. Always look both ways before crossing, even on sidewalks, as bike lanes move fast but don’t be nervous to rent a bike and live like the locals yourself.
Purchase museum tickets (especially the Anne Frank House) well in advance, as they frequently sell out.
The weather can change quickly, so layers and a light rain jacket are essential year-round.
Give yourself time to wander as some of Amsterdam’s best moments happen when you get a little lost along the canals!
Enjoy the magical city!
