Travel style

After two decades in the travel business and twenty quick minutes to think about my travel style:

1. Perception matters. A properly picked luxury hotel brand is sufficient, but not necessary for a luxurious trip.

2. Travel companions matter. If the wife and two teenage boys are happy, then all is well with the trip.

3. A good time matters. I like fancy dinners and a nice spa (fancy and nice being qualitative descriptors, not quantifiable ones).

4. Lists matter. Particularly checklists (and parentheses, too) always make for a better experience (there is dissension from my family on this one, which I take the responsibility of managing intrapersonally).

5. Ownership matters. A local experience means that the money stays locally.

6. Logistics matter. A well-planned transfer with backups or where a hotel is located is just as important as the hotel itself.

7. Learning matters. I like museums (a half-day tour with a half-day to browse).

8. Exercise matters. I want to know if there's a decent treadmill available and/or what my outside running options are.

9. Libraries matter. If a hotel has a great library and someone on staff that can talk locally inspired books and authors, then I'm a fan for life.

10. Music matters. Every trip should have a playlist so your brain can easily go back to the trip when you return.

Reid 's reviews

I know it's weird to keep leaving reviews, but I would like to point out that I do keep traveling with Reid because he keeps doing a great job. This trip had horrific air travel delays, and while I do keep waiting for him to reach whatever travel agent status allows you to control the weather and fly all the planes, in the meantime he kept me apprised of all my options, advised me on what to do, and overall helped me salvage the trip.

Reid is wonderful. His attention to detail is impressive—he takes time to get to know what kind of traveler you are, and his knowledge of the industry is so deep that he knows not just what’s “best” but also what will be best for YOU. I always feel well taken care of down to the details even I wouldn’t have thought of for myself.

If I were going to plan a trip to the moon, I would absolutely ask Reid to plan it. Mars? Reid. Exoplanets of Upsilon Andromedae? Reid. Kerrville? Reid. Why? Because no one I know would be more committed to knowing where the Tesla chargers are on the moon, or whether there's good beer in the TRAPPIST-1 system, or a nice shady running trail on Mars. If things get dicey in Kerrville, I know he'll know where the secret tunnels are to escape. Apparently his love for trivia turned out to be a real asset.
