Ready to jet-set to paradise? For those living with diabetes, planning a trip can feel a little complicated. You have to consider your medication, diet, and how to stay healthy while enjoying your vacation. But here’s the good news: Hawai'i is an amazing destination that's not only breathtaking but also incredibly diabetes-friendly. From thrilling adventures to delicious, healthy food, you can explore the islands without missing a beat.

Adventure awaits in Oahu

Oahu is the heart of Hawai'i, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich history, and thrilling activities.

  • Go off-roading at Coral Crater Adventure Park: For an adrenaline rush, check out Coral Crater Adventure Park's combo tour. You'll start by taking a powerful ATV on a thrilling off-road ride, navigating hills and trails with expert guides. Then, get ready to fly! The zip line tour sends you soaring through the lush jungle canopy. With a state-of-the-art braking system, you can focus on the pure excitement and amazing views.

  • Hike to Manoa Falls: If you prefer to connect with nature, a guided hike to Manoa Falls is a must. This 150-foot waterfall, famous for its appearance in Jurassic Park, is a true gem. The trail winds through the vibrant Manoa Valley Rainforest, and your guide will share fascinating insights into Hawaiian culture and history. Plus, many tours include a delicious, healthy lunch to keep your energy up.

  • Snorkel at Hanauma Bay: Dive into the underwater world at Hanauma Bay, a protected marine-life conservation area. This volcanic crater is teeming with tropical fish and vibrant coral reefs, making it a snorkeler’s paradise. Booking a tour is a smart move, as it takes the stress out of your visit by providing round-trip transportation and high-quality gear.

  • Take a historical deep dive: For history buffs, a visit to the Pearl Harbor National Monument is a powerful experience. Start at the visitor center to watch a documentary film and explore exhibits about the events of December 7, 1941. A guide will then take you to the Pearl Harbor National Memorial for a deeper, more personal look at this pivotal World War II site.

Stay healthy & satisfied: Dining in Honolulu

One of the biggest perks of visiting Hawai'i is the incredible local cuisine. The islands are a hub for farm-to-table dining, making it easy to find fresh, healthy, and delicious food that fits your meal plan and is lower in sugar.

  • Chef Chai: For a special night out, Chef Chai is a top-tier choice. This acclaimed restaurant, led by owner and chef Chai Chaowasaree, masterfully blends fresh local Hawaiian ingredients with a mix of Asian flavors. Many of his dishes, like the highly praised miso Alaskan black cod, are excellent options that focus on savory flavors rather than sweet ones, making it easier to manage your sugar intake.

  • Goofy Cafe & Dine: Located near Waikiki, Goofy Cafe & Dine has a relaxed "surfer cafe" vibe and a strong commitment to local ingredients. This is a go-to spot for an authentic, healthy meal. Their menu features a variety of dishes that showcase the island's bounty, like the protein-rich ahi poke avocado bowl for lunch and the grilled mahi mahi for dinner. These dishes are fantastic choices for a low-sugar diet.

  • The Valley Health Bar: Need a quick and healthy bite? The Valley Health Bar is a fantastic little spot that specializes in fresh, nutritious food. You can grab a salad or a hearty sandwich like the Waimea Valley sandwich. While they do have açaí bowls that can be high in sugar, their savory options are perfect for a low-sugar meal that will still leave you feeling full and satisfied.

  • Merriman's: Located in Honolulu, Merriman's is a pioneer of the farm-to-table movement in Hawaii. Over 90 percent of their menu is locally sourced, ensuring every dish is incredibly fresh. I highly recommend the salmon, which is packed with protein and omega-3 fatty acids, excellent for a healthy metabolism and a great low-sugar choice.

  • Barefoot Beach Cafe: This casual beachfront eatery is a local hotspot with stunning views of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. They offer a variety of local favorites, and the garlic shrimp plate is a fantastic option. Shrimp is naturally low in carbohydrates and high in protein, making it an excellent choice for a delicious, low-sugar meal.

Tips for a smooth trip

Traveling with medical supplies like insulin and a glucometer might seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be. A little preparation goes a long way.

  • Access to pharmacies and hospitals: If you need anything at all during your trip, rest assured that Hawai'i has a strong healthcare infrastructure. There are pharmacies everywhere, including major chains like Walgreens and CVS. If a medical emergency were to arise, you can be confident in the quality of care. Honolulu has great hospitals, such as Adventist Health Castle, which is known for its cleanliness and friendly staff.

  • Contact TSA Cares: To ensure a smooth journey through airport security, consider emailing TSA Cares about a week before your flight. You can find their contact information on the TSA website. This proactive step can help prevent any potential misunderstandings and make your screening process much easier.

  • Board the plane with insulin in your carry-on: You can absolutely bring insulin and other diabetic supplies on a plane. I recommend packing them in your carry-on luggage in a small cooler with an ice pack in it. That way, you can easily inform the TSA agent that you have needles and other medical supplies, which can help prevent any problems with your checked bags. A fun fact: checked bags are screened before they're put on the plane, so keeping your supplies with you gives you more control and peace of mind. Plus, your insulin can stay cool.

  • Secure insulin storage: Don't leave your insulin's storage to chance! Before your trip, be sure to contact your hotel directly or have your travel advisor do so. Request a refrigerator for your room to store your insulin and ask them to make a note of this medical necessity on your reservation. This simple step will ensure your medication is kept at the proper temperature upon arrival.
