A Pet-Friendly Retreat at Isla Bella Resort
Curator’s statement

Each year, my husband and I retreat to Florida for his birthday — this time, we set our sights on the Florida Keys. Seeking a destination that blended luxury with ease, we arrived at Isla Bella Beach Resort, a property that delivers understated elegance with an effortless sense of place.

A coastal sanctuary

Nestled at the foot of the iconic Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon, Isla Bella’s 24-acre oceanfront setting offers a sense of seclusion while remaining conveniently close to local attractions. The resort's pristine white architecture and lush tropical landscaping create a tranquil atmosphere, with every room and suite providing stunning ocean views and private outdoor terraces. What stood out most was the seamless integration of pet-friendly hospitality within a refined setting. From the moment we arrived, our dog, Petey, was treated as a guest in his own right — welcomed with a personalized amenity bag, a collapsible water bowl, biodegradable waste bags and an Isla Bella dog tag. A thoughtful touch was the
adorable plush, branded navy blue dog bed delivered to our room, allowing Petey to settle in as comfortably as we did. Everything about his stay felt intentional — no small details overlooked.

Mornings & sunsets

Sunrise walks along the resort’s mile-long path became a quiet ritual, the air still cool, the water impossibly still. With pet hydration stations along the way, the only thing to do was enjoy the movement, the light and the calm before the day began,

As the sun dipped below the horizon, we borrowed the resort’s complimentary bikes and pedaled toward a private pier. With a glass of wine in hand, we watched the sky fade to violet, the last boats gliding past — a moment that lingers long after you leave.

Beyond the resort

For those seeking more than the tranquility of Isla Bella, the surrounding Keys offer quiet adventures that embrace the region’s natural beauty and laid-back charm. A short drive leads to Long Key State Park, where two coastal trails wind through lush landscapes with endless ocean views. In Marathon, the marina-lined waterfront and nearby Islamorada’s understated yet exceptional dining provide a perfect contrast to Isla Bella’s seclusion.

Although you can kennel your pet in your room (the resort provides an adorable bone-shaped magnet alerting the staff not to enter or disturb your pup while you're gone), I opted to skip the spa and visit the Mahina Restaurant instead. It offers a "Sunset Glow" mocktail with turmeric and coconut milk designed to complement post-sun skincare routines. Pair it with the grilled octopus small plate for a rejuvenating pre-dinner ritual.

Where to go:

  • Square Grouper (Islamorada)

    – A relaxed waterfront restaurant known for its fresh lobster rolls. While waiting for a table, take a walk along the marina and soak in the atmosphere.

  • First Flight Island Restaurant & Brewery (Key West)

    – Set in a historic Pan Am Airways building, this spot blends craft beer with tropical flavors. The outdoor deck is a breezy, laid-back place to linger.

  • Salty Pup Adventures (Marathon)

    – A boat charter that welcomes dogs, offering sandbar stops, snorkeling and sunset cruises. If bringing a pet, pack a dog life jacket, as not all charters provide them.

  • Lilly & Lola’s Pet Boutique (Key West)

    – A charming shop with high-quality pet treats, accessories and a self-service dog wash — perfect after a day exploring the coast.

  • Isla Bella Resort Marketplace (Marathon)

    – Open to both guests and the public, this boutique stocks locally made jewelry, resort wear and beautifully curated picnic essentials. The concierge can arrange a custom picnic basket for a sunset outing.

Need to know

Pet policies:

  • Fees:

$100 per night for the first dog, $25 per night for a second dog. While the fee may seem steep, it reflects the thoughtful approach to pet accommodations — from personalized amenities to designated relief areas that ensure both convenience and comfort.

  • Restrictions:

Up to two dogs per room, each at least one year old.

  • Amenities:

Upon arrival, dogs receive a goody bag, including a collapsible water bowl, biodegradable waste bags, an Isla Bella dog tag and a plush dog bed for in-room use.

  • Guidelines:

Dogs must be leashed in public areas and are not allowed in restaurants, pools, the Marketplace, the spa or the fitness center. If left unattended in the room, they should be crated.

Personal tips for a seamless stay

  • Dine with a view:

Book a table at The Beach Bar and grab a firepit seat — perfect for a post-sunset drink with the ocean breeze.

  • Best sunset spot:

The pier near Building 7 is the quietest place for an evening glass of wine. If you're lucky, you might spot a manatee.

  • Morning ritual:

The waterfront path is nearly empty before 7 am — a perfect time for a peaceful walk. Bring a collapsible bowl for your dog, as hydration stations are available along the way.

  • Not a swimming beach:

While the waterfront is stunning, this is more of a lounging and watersports resort rather than a traditional sandy beach destination.

The takeaway:

Some places are destinations in themselves — Isla Bella is one of them. A retreat designed for those who appreciate luxury without excess, where the beauty of the setting is matched only by its sense of ease. The investment in a pet-friendly stay here isn’t just about allowing dogs — it’s about welcoming them with the same level of care and thoughtfulness given to every guest.
