Advisor - Viva Madrid: Exploring the Heartbeat of Spain
Curator’s statement

Madrid feels like a charming mix of my hometown, New Orleans. The lively streets are lined with boutiques and restaurants offering delicious tapas and menú del día. Its central location makes it perfect for day trips to nearby cities, coastal getaways or even to France. Day or night, Madrid has something special to offer.

Things to do in Madrid

Museums

Museo del Prado, Museo Reina Sofía and Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza

These renowned museums, all within walking distance, house Madrid’s finest art collections, from classical masterpieces to modern icons.

Royal Palace of Madrid

Visit the Royal Palace, the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, featuring breathtaking gold interiors, opulent rooms and incredible artwork by Francisco Goya. Be sure to catch the Changing of the Guard at the start of each month.

Retiro Park

Spend a relaxing afternoon in Retiro Park with friends, sipping wine, wandering through the Rose Garden or taking a bike tour to discover the park's rich history and hidden gems.

Palacio de Cibeles

Also known as CentroCentro, is an architectural marvel in Plaza de Cibeles, offering fascinating tours and a spectacular observation deck with panoramic views of the city.

Salamanca shopping district

For a shopping experience like no other, stroll through Salamanca, Madrid's chicest neighborhood, where luxury brands meet local Spanish designers for the perfect retail therapy.

Mercado San Miguel

Mercado San Miguel is a must-visit destination for food lovers, offering an array of fresh produce and regional specialties that showcase Spain’s culinary excellence.

Plaza Mayor

After exploring the city, relax in Plaza Mayor with a refreshing pitcher of sangria and browse the local shops for unique souvenirs.

Plaza de Toros

The Plaza de Toros is a stunning stadium that hosts the historic bullfights. While it can be a gut wrenching experience, it offers an unforgettable glimpse into a classic Spanish tradition.

Kapital Nightclub

Dance the night away at Kapital, Madrid’s largest nightclub, with seven distinct floors, each offering its own vibe, music and bars.

Day trips

  • Sevilla

Catch a Renfe train from Madrid to beautiful Sevilla for a full-day tour. Start early with a visit to the stunning Alcázar Palace, then explore Barrio Santa Cruz and enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant (avoid ones with picture menus). Continue your day with stops at Seville Cathedral, Giralda Tower and the Guadalquivir River at sunset before heading back to Madrid.

  • Playa de Bolarque

Grab your swimsuit, pack a beach picnic and rent a car to escape the city to a stunning natural pool. Relax on the sea-like sand, go kayaking to spot turtles and take in the breathtaking views surrounded by mountains. Just be sure to purchase your entrance tickets before you go!

Places to eat & drink in Madrid

Chocolatería San Ginés

Chocolatería San Ginés is a legendary chocolate shop, serving up authentic hot chocolate, perfect for dipping their freshly made churros. Open 24/7, every day of the year, it's a must-visit for any time of day or night.

Sobrino de Botín

Sobrino de Botín, operating since 1725, is the oldest continuously running restaurant in Madrid. It's said that even Francisco Goya worked here before his acceptance into the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.

Bel Mondo

Bel Mondo offers an unforgettable eclectic dining experience with creative cocktails and tableside carbonara. Every corner of the restaurant is Instagram-worthy! If you have time, I highly recommend enjoying a meal on the terrace and then returning to eat in the salon.

Tiki Tako

Tiki Tako is the perfect spot for happy hour with €1 tacos and v5 margaritas! Try all the tacos and be sure to ask for a side of salsa to add the perfect kick.

Mercado San Ildefonso

Mercado San Ildefonso is a three-story food court located in my favorite neighborhood. With a variety of cuisine from Japanese to American to fusion, it's ideal for grabbing small bites from different stalls and sharing with friends.

Palacio de Bellas Artes

The Palacio de Bellas Artes is an art museum that also boasts a rooftop restaurant, serving some of the best drinks and tapas in the city while offering stunning views.

Gracias Padre

Gracias Padre is the cutest Mexican spot, serving everything from chilaquiles and quesadillas to tacos and amazing margaritas. Can’t decide on appetizers? Definitely go for the queso fundido to share with the table.

Miyama

Miyama is a classic Japanese restaurant, ideally located near the best shops, making it the perfect spot to grab a quick sushi bite during your shopping spree.
