Things to do in Playa del Carmen

  • Stroll 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida): A lively pedestrian street full of shops, restaurants, bars, street performers and local vendors. Great for souvenirs, people-watching and evening vibes.

  • Visit a Cenote: Popular options nearby: Cenote Azul, Cenote Cristalino and Gran Cenote. Swim, snorkel or dive in these crystal-clear freshwater sinkholes surrounded by jungle.

  • Day trip to Tulum: Explore Mayan ruins overlooking the ocean, then hit the chic beach clubs or boho shops. It’s about a 45-minute drive away.

  • Relax at a beach club: Check out Lido Beach Club, INTI or Coralina Daylight Club for good food, drinks and beach loungers. Some are more chill — others feel like mini Vegas pool parties.

  • Ferry to Cozumel: 45-minute ferry ride to world-class snorkeling and diving spots. Rent a scooter or jeep to explore the island.

  • Xcaret Park or Xel-Há: Eco-adventure parks with underground rivers, animal encounters and cultural performances. Great for families or couples wanting an immersive day.

  • Snorkel or scuba at Akumal: Swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat. About 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen.

  • Explore Mayan Ruins at Coba or Chichen Itza: Coba is less touristy and you can still climb the pyramid! Chichen Itza is a Wonder of the World but more crowded and farther out (2+ hours).

  • Nightlife & beach bars: Check out Coco Bongo, Mandala or Palazzo for over-the-top shows and dancing. More low-key? Try rooftop bars like Thompson Hotel’s Catch or Be Roof.

  • Eat your way through Playa: Tacos at El Fogón, seafood at Los Aguachiles or fine dining at Oh Lala!. Don’t skip a churro cart or fresh coconut water from a street vendor.

Places to eat & drink in Playa del Carmen

Local favorites (authentic, affordable, delicious)

  • El Fogón: Classic taqueria — famous for tacos al pastor and grilled meats. Lively and loved by locals.

  • Don Sirloin: Great for casual tacos, especially sirloin and arrachera. Budget-friendly and quick.

  • La Cueva del Chango: Jungle vibes and traditional Mexican breakfast and lunch. Iconic Playa spot.

  • Pescadería El Pirata: No-frills seafood joint known for ceviche, fried fish and cold beers.

  • Rockas Jamaican Kitchen: A laid-back, flavorful option with Caribbean soul — jerk chicken, oxtail and island cocktails.

  • Chez Céline: French café and bakery. Not fancy, but very charming — great for a relaxed breakfast or dessert.

High-end & special-occasion dining

  • Alux Restaurant: Upscale dining in a natural underground cave. Super unique and romantic.

  • Oh Lala!: Intimate, fine dining with international cuisine. Stellar service and a rotating seasonal menu.

  • Porfirio’s Playa del Carmen: Upscale modern Mexican — great ambiance, music and presentation. Feels like a celebration.

  • Harry’s Prime Steakhouse & Raw Bar: Luxury steak and seafood spot with impeccable service and ocean views.

  • Trujillos Cantina de Selva: Elevated jungle garden setting with a gourmet twist on regional Mexican flavors and creative cocktails.

Need to know

  • Don’t just stay on 5th Avenue: While Quinta Avenida is lively and fun, prices are inflated and can be touristy. Venture a few blocks away for better food and more local experiences.

  • Bring pesos (not just USD): Most places accept USD, but you’ll get a better deal paying in pesos. Use ATMs inside banks (not on the street) to withdraw local currency.

  • Use ADO busses or collectivos: Affordable and safe transportation to nearby places like Tulum, Cancun or cenotes. Collectivos are super cheap and used by locals.

  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen: If you’re swimming in cenotes or near reefs, chemical sunscreens are not allowed. Bring biodegradable options to protect marine life.

  • Book cenotes and excursions early: The popular ones (like Dos Ojos or Cenote Azul) get crowded. Go early in the morning or book with a guide in advance.

  • Watch out for timeshare pitches: You’ll see them near the airport and along 5th Ave. Be polite but firm if you're not interested — they can be persistent.

  • Stay hydrated & be cautious with tap water: Stick to bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth. It’s hot and humid, so drink plenty of water daily.

  • Tip like a local: 10–15% is standard for good service. Bring small bills and coins for tips at restaurants, hotels and tours.

  • Don’t rely solely on card payments: Some spots are cash only, especially small restaurants or beach vendors. Always keep a bit of cash on hand.

  • Learn a few Spanish phrases: Many people speak English, but using basic Spanish phrases (like “gracias” or “la cuenta, por favor”) goes a long way and is appreciated.
