If you’re a traveling cat-lover (like me), Istanbul must be on your bucket list. Istanbul’s special relationship with cats began in the Byzantine and Ottoman eras when they were prized for their ability to control the rodent population in a city surrounded by water, where ships and food stores were vulnerable to pests. Over time, these working cats became cherished members of the community.

What makes Istanbul’s cats so unique is their semi-wild status. They’re not feral, nor are they fully domesticated. They roam freely, but are lovingly cared for by residents, who often leave food and water out for them. Cats in Istanbul are considered part of the urban fabric, and the local community and government both take collective responsibility for their welfare.
