OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort: A Cultural Gem on Waikiki’s Edge
Curator’s statement

There’s something truly special about the OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort that sets it apart from the typical Waikiki experience. From the moment you step inside and see the hand-crafted canoe in the lobby, you’re reminded of Hawaii’s deep-rooted traditions and the property’s commitment to honoring local culture. I was especially moved by the fact that every shop on the property is locally owned, creating a genuine sense of community and authenticity. This resort offers the perfect blend of easy beach access, thoughtful amenities, and a peaceful location just off the main strip—making it a place I’m excited to recommend to travelers seeking a more meaningful Hawaiian escape.

My recent site visit to the OUTRIGGER Reef Waikiki Beach Resort left me genuinely impressed by how seamlessly the property blends modern comfort with authentic Hawaiian culture. The layout is intuitive and welcoming, with valet parking right at the entrance and a lobby that immediately draws you in with its striking hand-made canoe—a tribute to Hawaii’s seafaring heritage. The resort’s commitment to supporting local artisans is evident in every retail space, all of which are locally owned, giving guests a chance to connect with the community in a meaningful way.

One of my favorite features is the resort’s location. It sits just off the main Waikiki strip, so you get all the benefits of being close to the action without the constant buzz of heavy tourism. The beach is directly accessible from the hotel—while the stretch isn’t huge, it’s perfect for a morning swim or sunset stroll. For those looking for adventure, a catamaran launches right nearby, making it easy to get out on the water for a sail or snorkeling trip.

During my tour, I had the chance to view both the Club 1 Bedroom Ocean View Suite and the Club Resort View room. Both were beautifully renovated, spacious, and well-appointed. Above each bed are curated art pieces brought to the hotel in partnership with the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum. These are just part of the broader transformation aimed at bringing authentic Hawaiian culture and residential feel into the rooms.

Many rooms have access to the exclusive Voyager 47 Club Lounge (Club 47). This lounge is a real highlight, offering a Hawaiian-style breakfast, premium Kona coffee, evening appetizers, and a stunning view of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. It’s a fantastic upgrade for guests who appreciate a little extra pampering and privacy.

Dining at the resort is another standout. Kani Ka Pila Grille offers casual, open-air dining with nightly live Hawaiian music, creating a lively and authentic atmosphere. Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman brings a farm-to-table approach with creative cocktails and fresh, local ingredients. The resort fee covers a host of extras, including cultural activities like hula and arts and crafts, access to the fitness center, and even admission to local museums—making it a great value for families and couples alike. There’s also a beautiful outdoor pool with whirlpool spas, and plenty of space for private events or meetings.
