Curator’s statement
When I was in my early twenties, I saw an Instagram video featuring a honeymoon suite in Santorini, Greece, complete with an uber-attractive couple walking hand-in-hand into an infinity pool that led from their room outside to reveal the dusk-bathed beauty of the Mediterranean Sea. It was in that moment that I decided that one day—probably when I’d met the man of my dreams—I’d honeymoon in Santorini and live out my own infinity pool fantasy. Fast forward 10 years—still single and with no husband on the horizon—I decided that I’d do something many wouldn’t dream of doing: I was going to go alone to the love island of Santorini. I just couldn’t wait.

There’s something incredibly empowering about stepping off a plane with no one’s agenda but your own. Already floating on the magic of that feeling, I checked into an absolutely breathtaking villa that served as my home while on the island. White Pearl Villas provided me with a room truly worthy of a honeymoon—even though I wasn’t honeymooning—complete with a private plunge pool (oh my gosh!) on my very own balcony overlooking the sea. I arrived to a delicious plate of fresh fruit and complimentary wine and settled right in.

The next morning, I loaded up on a tour bus, the salty breeze brushing my face through open windows, as I made my way to the Akrotiri Archaeological Site. Walking through the ancient ruins of this 16th-century BC Minoan settlement felt surreal—like stepping into a forgotten world slowly revealing its story. I wandered at my own pace, pausing whenever I wanted to admire the preserved pottery and intricate layout of a once-thriving town buried in volcanic ash.

After soaking up the quiet mystery of Akrotiri, I followed a dusty path toward Red Beach, just a short walk away. The contrast between the deep crimson cliffs and the turquoise water was breathtaking—no photo could ever really do it justice.

As a solo traveler, you become your own best company, but striking up conversations with fellow travelers can be one of the most memorable parts of a trip. At the beach with my group, we swapped stories, wondered about the ruins we’d just seen, and clinked glasses to the beauty of going with the flow. But even when I was completely alone, I never felt lonely. Santorini, with all its magic, has a way of filling the space around you.
This trip reminded me that I don’t need a plus-one to experience joy, curiosity, or awe. For anyone out there reading, neither do you. I felt powerful walking ancient streets, swimming under crimson cliffs, and dining solo with a view that could break your heart in the best way. Being single doesn’t mean being incomplete—it means freedom to chase your own wonder. And in Santorini, I found exactly that.
