How many days in New Orleans do you need to get the full experience?

New Orleans is an exceptionally fun place to visit. While the city has a party reputation, the Big Easy is family-friendly for the most part. New Orleans nightlife can get a little wild, however, especially on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras.

To get the most out of your NOLA experience, you only need a few days to a week. The city isn’t huge, at least compared to a metropolis like New York. Whether you want a quick mother-daughter trip to New Orleans or a lengthy family vacation, you won’t feel rushed to see everything.

Is 3 days enough to visit New Orleans?

While you might miss a few things, you can absolutely see all or most of New Orleans’ greatest hits in three days.

Our New Orleans 3-day itinerary will show you how it’s done. Or, you can always chat with a New Orleans trip planner — aka Fora Advisor — to create a personalized itinerary.

How many days do you need to see allof New Orleans?

If you don’t want to miss a thing, a week will give you time to see all the greatest hits, plus the B-sides.

A week will also give you time to check out some of the neighboring communities along the sleepy Gulf Coast, like quaint Bay Saint Louis or up-and-coming casino town Biloxi, both in Mississippi.

When is the best time to visit New Orleans?

Our guide to the best time to go to New Orleans offers a comprehensive answer to this question. In short, late winter and spring are the best times to visit, but fall can be exciting, too, especially around the major holidays.

Some itinerary ideas based on how many days in New Orleans you have to work with

Depending on how many days to visit in New Orleans you have to work with, there are a lot of things you can do. Here are a few ideas.

And don’t forget, when you book your travel to New Orleans with Fora, an advisor can help you build a personalized itinerary.

1–2 days in New Orleans: explore the French Quarter, Bourbon Street & the Central Business District

If you only have a day to explore New Orleans, the French Quarter is a must-see. A vibrant display of French architecture, the neighborhood is easily New Orleans’ most recognizable landmark.

On the east end, narrow streets break into wide avenues filled with an eclectic mix of trendy cafés, mishmash boutiques, historical landmarks, dive bars and music halls. Some locals stroll amid lush parks while others flock to  the French Market to sift through a selection of art, secondhand gems and handmade goods.

In contrast, the west end of the French Quarter is infamously summed up by Bourbon Street, where you’ll find many of the top clubs, bars and other more risqué elements (New Orleans girls’ weekend, anyone?).

Overall, the French Quarter is one of the best areas to stay in New Orleans, if only because it offers such a unique experience.

As you move west toward the underrated Canal Street, you’ll arrive at the Central Business District, where most of the city’s swankiest hotels — like The Roosevelt — best restaurants and trendiest boutiques are found.

3–4+ days in New Orleans: stroll through the Garden District, take a haunted tour and check out the National World War II Museum

With three or four days, you’ll have more time to check out some of New Orleans’ hidden gems.

The city has a longstanding love affair with all things spooky, creepy and otherwise bizarre. Tours through the city’s underworld will have you meeting “real-life” vampires, searching for Voodoo tombs and tip-toeing through haunted houses and cemeteries.

The National World War II Museum, among other NOLA museums, is also worth visiting, especially for history buffs.

For a less gloomy experience, stroll through the Garden District to witness the old Victorian manors. Then grab brunch on Magazine Street.
