Seeing "& Juliet" in NYC: The Trip Where I Met a TikTok Star & the World's Number-One Vocal Coach
Curator’s statement

I recently went to New York City with one mission in mind: to see "& Juliet" on Broadway before the incredible Charli D'Amelio and Cheryl Porter concluded their runs. And let me tell you, it was absolutely flawless—one of the most exhilarating and entertaining shows I've seen in a long time! From the moment the curtain rose, I was completely captivated by the vibrant performances, the ingenious storyline, and, of course, the fantastic pop anthems. I simply had to write about this unforgettable experience!

Are you tired of the same old Shakespearean tragedy? Have you ever wondered what would happen if Juliet decided to choose her own fate instead of following Romeo to an early grave? If so, get ready to have your world turned upside down by the exhilarating, hilarious, and utterly fantastic musical, & Juliet.

This isn't your high school English class's Romeo and Juliet. It's a vibrant, pop-infused spectacle that asks a simple but brilliant "what if" question: "What if Juliet didn't kill herself?" Written by the Emmy-winning David West Read, who also lent his comedic genius to the beloved Schitt's Creek, this show is a masterclass in reinventing a classic story with modern wit and heart. The premise is simple: After Romeo's death, Juliet teams up with her best friends on an adventure to Paris to discover herself and what a life without Romeo looks like. Along the way, she discovers that life is about more than just finding love—it's about finding yourself.

What truly makes & Juliet a showstopper is its incredible score. It's a jukebox musical that brilliantly weaves together some of the biggest pop anthems of the last few decades. We’re talking about chart-toppers from pop legends like Britney Spears, Katy Perry, The Backstreet Boys, Kelly Clarkson, and more. Imagine Juliet belting out "Since U Been Gone" or "Roar" as she embarks on her journey of self-discovery. The anachronistic blend of Shakespearean prose and modern pop music creates a comedic and energetic dynamic that will have you laughing, dancing, and singing along from your seat.

But don't let the pop songs fool you—this show has a serious heart. & Juliet is a powerful celebration of self-love, friendship, and the courage to write your own story. It's a love letter to anyone who has ever felt pressured to follow a pre-written script. The show is incredibly inclusive and celebrates people from all walks of life. This is exemplified in the character of May, a non-binary character portrayed by Michael Ivan Carter. In a fun nod to history—when Shakespearean plays were first produced, women were forbidden from the stage, and men played female roles. This casting decision is a thoughtful and refreshing way to honor the past while embracing a more inclusive future.

The cast of & Juliet is phenomenal. Gianna Harris brings a voice of both strength and vulnerability to the role of Juliet. Her vocal performance is nothing short of incredible. But she isn't the only one who shines. The comedic timing of Drew Gehling as the narcissistic and theatrical William Shakespeare is absolutely hysterical. His playful banter with Anne Hathaway, played with witty elegance by Alison Luff, is a highlight of the show.

Then there’s the incredible Cheryl Porter as the Nurse, who delivers both laughs and heartfelt advice. She brings an endearing and grounding energy to the stage. In my opinion, I feel that this role was made for her because in real life, Cheryl (also known as Mama Cheryl) has that mother figure energy about her. Seeing her live was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!

And who could forget Charli D'Amelio, whose dancing in the ensemble is absolutely breathtaking and a testament to her incredible talent? Every member of the cast brings their A-game, making for a truly unforgettable theatrical experience.

The set design is a feast for the eyes, with vibrant colors and clever staging that transitions seamlessly between scenes. The costumes are a perfect blend of modern fashion and historical inspiration. The lighting design creates a magical atmosphere that enhances every song and every emotional moment. Every technical aspect of the production works in perfect harmony to create a visual and auditory spectacle that will leave you in awe.

& Juliet is more than just a musical; it's a feeling. It's the feeling of pure joy, of unbridled fun, and of a story that resonates deeply. It's the kind of show that will have you on your feet, dancing in your seat, and leaving the theater with a smile that won’t fade for days. It’s the kind of show you'll want to see again and again.

After the show, I was so excited to meet the cast and get their autographs, and I even got a picture with Charli D'Amelio, which was a dream come true! A huge shout-out to both Charli D'Amelio and Cheryl Porter because they were so genuinely kind. They went above and beyond by taking the time to talk to fans after the show, even late at night around 11 pm. It’s that kind of dedication and care that makes the whole experience even more special. I truly can’t recommend & Juliet enough, and I’m already counting down the days until I can go back and see it all over again!

Need to know

And just like that, our trip to the city has come to a close. If there’s one thing to take away, it’s that & Juliet is worth every single penny. It's a show that will have you laughing, singing, and tapping your feet all night long. Seriously, don't miss it.

If you're planning to stay over, I can't recommend The Knickerbocker enough, especially if you're catching an 8 pm show. It's a fantastic spot that's conveniently close to everything. For all my fellow Long Islanders, remember that Grand Central is your best bet for a smooth ride in and out of the city if you're seeing a show at the Stephen Sondheim Theater.
