Hotel Spotlight - Oceanfront Elegance at The Chanler at Cliff Walk
Curator’s statement

As a Newport-based travel advisor, The Chanler is one of the first places I recommend to couples or clients seeking a truly elevated experience. I recently had the opportunity to tour the entire property, and every detail — from the themed guest rooms to the newly redesigned Remy's Loose — was breathtaking. This hotel blends Gilded-Age architecture with modern luxury in a way that feels both timeless and intimate. It's the kind of place where every stay feels like a special occasion.

Trip Overview

Set at the beginning of Newport’s scenic Cliff Walk, The Chanler at Cliff Walk is more than just a luxury hotel — it’s a living piece of history. Housed in a 19th-century mansion, this boutique property offers a rare blend of personalized service, curated design and coastal beauty that feels entirely transportive. During my in-depth tour of the hotel, I explored every room category and amenity — and I can confidently say it’s one of the most thoughtfully designed and romantic properties in New England.

One of the most distinctive aspects of The Chanler is that no two rooms are alike. Each of the 20 guest rooms is uniquely themed based on the owner's world travels, ranging from French Provincial and Moroccan to Renaissance and English Tudor styles. You’ll find hand-carved headboards, antique soaking tubs, silk wallpaper and architectural details you’d expect in a European villa. Room layouts vary widely, but many offer ocean views, private entrances, outdoor hot tubs and fireplaces — ideal for honeymoons, anniversaries or just a cozy weekend escape.

Room capacity ranges from two to four guests depending on the category, and the hotel is happy to accommodate special requests. Select rooms are also ADA-compliant, including barrier-free bathrooms and accessible pathways throughout the property — an important detail for travelers with mobility needs.

The culinary offerings at The Chanler are just as impressive as the accommodations. The newly redesigned Remy's Loose is a relaxed, stylish space where comfort and curiosity come together. Whether you're enjoying a light bite or celebrating a special occasion, cozy banquettes, garden-inspired cocktails and dishes made to share set the scene. The open kitchen lets you see the artistry behind each dish, while the Terrace invites you to unwind with ocean views in hand. With a French-inspired menu that celebrates both local catches and global ingredients, every bite reflects the perfect blend of Rhode Island’s coastal charm and timeless flavors.

For a more formal dining experience, Cara, The Chanler's signature Forbes Five-Star, AAA Five Diamond restaurant, offers contemporary and creative blind-tasting menus inspired by European elegance and sustainable New England ingredients. Executive Chef Jacob Jasinski lets the food take center stage with avant-garde cuisine, creating new dishes daily to highlight ingredients harvested at their peak. The kitchen team thoughtfully presents and explains each dish to provide a storied view into the creative process, creating a dynamic interaction between the chefs, service team and guests. An optional wine pairing from the extensive beverage list recognized by Wine Spectator's Award of Excellence is curated nightly for each dish. Cara is open Wednesday–Sunday.

During the summer months, guests can enjoy the Ca' del Bosco Wine Garden, where the tantalizing scent of authentic Italian pizza mingles with the fragrance of blooming flowers. Relax in Adirondack chairs beneath the dappled shade of umbrellas, sip on Franciacorta wine and Italian Spritzers and let yourself be whisked away to the picturesque Amalfi Coast for the afternoon, no passport required. The Wine Garden is open daily from noon – 6 pm, weather permitting.

Whether you're sipping coffee on your private patio or watching the waves crash during dinner, The Chanler makes every moment feel effortless and cinematic. For travelers looking for a stay that’s rich in history, character and one-of-a-kind luxury, this is Newport’s crown jewel.
