While the final approach might initially feel as if you’ve taken a wrong turn, trust the directions. As you continue, the paved road turns to dirt and you begin winding through olive groves, a true hallmark of the Andalusian countryside. After a bit, you’ll see the walls of an old manor house come into view, nestled among the contours of the rolling hills. As you arrive and pull into the parking area, you’ll question if you’re at the right destination.

However, any uncertainty disappears the moment the massive doors set within the surrounding high walls slowly swing open. Stepping across the threshold, you enter a sanctuary within the walls of the stunningly restored 16th-century manor house—a cortijo—that has been meticulously updated with every comfort and modern amenity for a 21st-century boutique hotel.

Passing through the front archway, you enter the main courtyard and are greeted with the soothing splash of water, creating a calming sense of tranquility. Everywhere you look, the architecture and design contribute to this feeling of peace. The arched doorways of the on-site restaurant open directly onto the courtyard, inviting guests in. The main residential building itself overlooks a charming garden. A short stroll across the courtyard reveals the beautifully restored chapel, and not far from there is a second, smaller inner courtyard, which is filled with blossoming orange trees, depending on the season.

A discreet small door in this second courtyard leads to the pool area. This space is a true highlight, boasting panoramic views of the classic rolling Andalusian hills that stretch out to the horizon. Designed with relaxation in mind, the pool area provides designated areas for those seeking the sun and those who prefer to relax in the shade. It serves as the perfect retreat to unwind after a long day spent exploring the nearby sights and to cool off after a day in the Spanish summer sun.

To maintain the quiet and serene atmosphere, Cortijo del Marques only welcomes children aged 12 and over and restricts bookings to groups of no more than eight people. The hotel features a select number of 15 rooms, thoughtfully designed and spacious enough to comfortably accommodate families or small groups.

The culinary experience at Cortijo del Marques is as personal and exclusive as the accommodation. The restaurant is reserved solely for the enjoyment of hotel guests. A generous and freshly prepared buffet breakfast is thoughtfully included in the room rate. Lunch service is relaxed, offering a selection of traditional tapas, salads, and sandwiches.

A truly unique aspect of the dining service occurs during breakfast when the attentive staff presents the three-course dinner options for the upcoming evening. This is also the time when they meticulously check for any specific dietary needs, allergies, or preferences a guest might have. Once the evening’s menu is finalized and any adjustments are noted, the chef personally heads out to carefully source the freshest, highest-quality local and seasonal ingredients for that night’s meal.

To complement the cuisine, the hotel boasts an expertly curated selection of both fine Spanish and international wines, all chosen specifically to perfectly pair with the evening’s menu. Depending on the season, the dining ambiance shifts from the grand arched doors opening onto the main courtyard in the warmer summer months, to a cozy fireplace providing an intimate and warm atmosphere dramatically in the cooler winter months.

Cortijo del Marques, honored with the prestigious One Michelin Key, is genuinely an outstanding place that is a perfect blend of history, luxury, and serenity.
